I'll have to agree with Gnarls on this one, I was trying to be diplomatic but, I don't think there is much of a comparison between the two engines either.

Apples and Oranges my friends.

My 1st 4Runner was a 1992 with a 3.0 5 speed SR5 model, It had 348 thousand kilometers, I sold it after owning it for a month, got me a 87 4Runner with a 22re. The guy who got my 92 blew the 3.0 in a week, he ended up putting 6-7 thousand rebuilding the truck and lifting it on 37s. He wanted me to pay for the rebuild but I sold him the truck for a thousand. Anyways long story short a 22re in early years in a lighter 1st gen is sufficient, even better in a 79-83. I have my 83 Custom Cab SR5 and the 22r is gutless. if you go bigger tires with a 4cyl gears will help, but its non existent torque will still piss you off going up hills with slush unless your read is locked. As for a daily driver I prefer the 22re since gas only gets more expensive and im still in university. Taste and preference win but Toyota makes amazing engines and trucks and cars. Go 3.0 if you can afford the gas and maintenance, go 22re if you are on a budget. I'm trading my 83 Custon cab 4x4 for a 84runner with no motor lifted 10 inches. I'll be removing the 4 hockey pucks and run with no body lift. I have a donor 88 truck so the 22re is my only option. If $ was no issue 3vz or 5vz would be options I'd be looking at.

Right there with yaa man..I own a 3VZE..and I take care of it ,as if it was my baby. No problems yet with it. except an O2 Sensor but thats not really anything extraordinary...3VZE- if you take care of her, then she will take care of you...

I think people blow headgaskets in the 22REs and the 3VZEs because they run them into the ground. And then they complain ohh another 3.0 blown headgasket nothing new..Toyotas worst engine..which is complete BS.

And BTW 22RE owners How do you guys like that permanent Valve Tick, yeaa the 22REs are perfect huh...And b4 I get hate mail yes I know that the 3.0s have somewhat of a valve tick every ONCE in a while. because I own one...22RE vs 3VZE = no contest. 5VZFE/ Manual Trans = unbeatable..Sucks that I have an Auto 3.4

Veezy?

Heh heh. As a new owner of a '93 4runner, 3.0 w MT... gotta say, the manual is the only thing you want. One of my friend's has an auto, same year same engine, and I smoke him off the line every time. By the time I hit 5th I've usually got 4 car lengths.

I've driven a 22re, in another buddy's '91 ex cab... to slow after feeling the 3.0 in my 4runner. Good enough power for the pickup, but I do notice the lack of torque. And that was with an empty bed.

Most fun motor? Hands down that V6 in the '06 Tacomas. Holy BALLS does that thing pull. You can shift into 6th going up a huge hill, with 4 big guys in the cab, and the bed loaded with camping gear. And the pedal is still has 2/3rds to go to the floor!

My veezy has 210kms on it... no problems whatsoever. Usual timing belt, and I got the waterpump done at the same time just because. Oil still stays pretty golden right up to the 7500km change point. I also love the kick from 3000-5000rpm. Especially in 4wd hitting a forestry road. Love the torque.

Personally, I find the lack of power in the 4cyl almost intolerable... so there's my vote.

I refuse to comment on the relative reliabilities! Oooh, and who wants to see how the current gen. toyotas will be doing in 20 years? Any bets as to what is running original trannies and engines?!

Having owned several of both 22re hands down. The head gasket issue was a moot point, the only issue they ever had up there was in the early 90s when toyota got a bad batch of head castings and they were prone to pitting. Even that didnt occur till around 200k miles and even with a leaking head they will go another 20-30k before it ever needs to come off. I know for a fact that a mildly warmed up 22re will walk away from a 3.0 and live to talk about it. My last one was very built and I flogged the piss out of it everywhere I went, that motor has 150k on it and just went through its first timing set. The 3.slow got its reputation for a reason, it deserves it. Theres also a reason the 22r series of motors is regarded as one of the toughest motors put in a pickup, ever.

Lol, Thats funny, my dad made me get a 3.0 , because he said the 22RE had no power, but now Im paying for it with the Bad MPGs ( 11) even with a full tune up , no check engine light, no exhaust leak, I used to get 15 MPGs but now im down to 11. Anyways, I wanted a 22RE and now im paying for it by getting a 3.0, dnt get me wrong I love my Engine, just dnt like the MPGs and how much of a PITA it is to wrench on.

-No. 2 Idler Pulley starting to go out, That and Timing belt replacement
($600)

-Gas here is now at 3.05 a Gallon for Reg. I usually run Plus which is 3.15

Had em both.

I had a '87 22RE 4Runner 5 speed and I still have my '88 4Runner 3.0 5-speed (we'll kinda). I would absolutely go 3.0. Not only because it is more powerful right from the start, but it leaves the door open for the easy 5VZ swap down the road.

I drove the 3VZ to 243,000 miles without a hitch and took it out while it was still running like a top to do the 3.4 swap.

Now it is unstoppable. I'm running the 3.4 with a 2nd gen TRD supercharger and the URD fuel upgrades and I can tell you definitevly that there is no 22RE on the planet you can tie this thing to that I can't drag down the highway backwards.

3.0 gets its bad rep from mostly the automatic owners as being 3.slow. The parasitic auto drivetrain takes so much from it that it does feel slow, but in its defense, so does the 22RE auto. I would say that the manual trans instead of an auto trans would be the more pertinent dilemma. If it is even in question?

There is no replacement for displacement! if I have the option of 22re or 3vze I'd take the 3.0, with a manual it's all good. Sure mileage isn't that great but I'd rather have that extra power

22REs are for pussies. It's like bringing a knife to a gun fight compared to the 3VZE.

22RE = WEAK!!!

My 3VZE can whoop your 22RE's ass with 3 cylinders misfiring!

Fine then...don't believe me? You still think your 22RE is pretty bad ass?

Let's have a race!

Let's have a tug of war!

Who do you really think's gonna win either?

That's right!! Me and my 3VZE, that's who!!!

Now take your snivelling-ass self, and your weak-ass 22RE, on home.

Come back when you've got enough HP to deal with life in the real world.
