22re power lag

22re power lag
ok this is whats happening. i get a annoying power lag around 1500 to 2500 rpm, then it all of the sudden after 2500 just ripps. my guess is that i need to open up my intake because i have a header now? its a stock 22re with exhaust mods, header, new cat, cherrybomb glaspack, and out the back in the stock location. thats my only mods to the engine. o and i have a bit of an exhaust leak too. so my question is, should i make i bigger highflow intake like alot of guys do or what? my plan was to get a borla turbo muffler, open the intake up, and get a crawler cam to offset the loss of back pressure that the header provides. let me know what you think
oyah and because everyone asks - its a 91 standard cab 4x4 22re 5spd

From: Nashville TN. I can help you if you're close BUT NOBODY CAN HELP YOU IF YOU DON'T FILL YOUR LOCATION IN!
timing chain (guides broke) or exhaust is stopped up... and those 31's aint helping either...
Also inspect your plugs for being too lean or rich, to suit your exhaust...

timing chains guides are perfect, my engine is almost brandnew with like 75k km's on it. i dont know what could be stopped up in the ehaust because its the smae exhust i was running before i had the header installed? 31"s arent the problem, truck never laged this bad or noticable before the header? i will check my plugs when i get home today and i can take pics too, btw i just put a new rotor and cap on but it was laging before i did that too.

unless going to a thorley tri-y some low end torque is usually sacrificed for mid-upper end. I think what TyzToyz is getting at are you using a heated 02 sensor (you should). Also with the opened up exhaust mainly the glasspack, high flow cat (if that's what you have) and header this allows less back pressure which in turn also sacrifices low end torque. Unrestricting the intake side (ie K&N filter, larger bore throttle body etc) might help and is usually recommended before a header upgrade anyway especially on a fuel injected motor. Bumping up the timing a degree or two might help as well.
Also keep in mind, what is your driving style and do you really need to lug and/or 3/4 to full throttle the motor under 2500 rpm anyway. Do you really need to be in 3rd gear at 2000 RPM when you can be in 2nd gear at 3000 rpm. (my numbers might be off but it gives you an idea)

nothing has been changed with the egr, its bolted on and yesterday i found some bolts that were hand tight??? tightend them snug and my check engine light turned off and its running a little better but still lag. not sure what you mean by the heated o2 sensor? its a stock o2 and its not even a year old. its just a pacesetter header, new stock cat, glasspack then out the back. i have a k@n filter and thats it for intake. i usually use 1/4 throttle around town unless im hitting hills and i shift around 2500 to 3000 depending on the road and if im just cruising. im dont really try and go fast because it doesnt really go anyways haha but 1st gear if i rev it out really puts some power down now. this lag thing has just started to happen after the header. oyah i found part of the exhaust leak, between the block and header flange between the 3rd and 4th exhaust port, it just flows out a bit. hope that helps

Check your timing...it's out of wack somewhere. You will need to pull the valve cover and see if the cam sprocket has jumped a tooth. If that is good then put a light on it and make sure it's at 5* BTDC with the jumpers jumped.

Might also check the vacuum line running to the fuel pressure regulator. Make sure engine vacuum is getting to the regulator or else the engine will load up until about 2500 because of too high a fuel pressure:

Thanks guys for the help. I will pop the valve cover tomorrow if its nice and take a pic or two, though last time it was off everything looked good and the chain wasnt loose or anything.
I might have a vac leak and i bet its that because i get really high idle when its first starts up like 1800 rpm for a few mins then 1500 for a bit?
You know what i have never checked the fuel filter lol always slips my mind, im gonna go check that since there is still some light out

Your fuel filter is right above the starter and oil filter on the passenger side of the block under the intake plenum.
I was wondering about the header and the O2 sensor because my Runner does this on occasion and I haven't found out what it is.
I have heard that the O2 sensor is really only used when the engine is at idle, but my header (heddman), has a really long tube where the sensor is bolted to (the probe doesn't get into the path of the exhaust). I want to modify the header so that the probe for the O2 sensor is directly in the path of the exhaust to see if it fixes my problem, but haven't yet.
My rig is a trail only rig, so I have not put alot of time or thought into the whole situation, just a suggestion.
Good Luck,
Tye

hey so i havent been able to get to the fuel filter yet because i was so sure it was my exhaust leak making me egr not work right so i got a new gasket and some black rvt and sealed it up and it still lags but not as bad but still bad lol but its nice a nd quiet now which is nice. so now im going to try and get a new fuel filter and try that. any tips on changing it? never changed one like the one on a 22re, usually they are little cylinders you just pull the in and out line off and throw a new one in but this one seems like its mounted and weird? so yeah any tips or idea on prices? thanks

gonna to drive this truck off a cliff i swear
so much power lag its not even funny anymore, just sucks really bad. iv had nothing but problems with this fricken toyota! i swear its a really a ford with some toyota badges on it. havent been able to get a fuel filter yet but im not thinking its that anyways. to better describe what happens, its basicaly like this: as soon as you let the clutch out after shifting to 2nd you get this laggy starving bogg then it starts to go after atleast 3 seconds, then shift again and boom its just blaaaaaaaaaa then power??? WTF??? it sucks when you need to get going in a hurry and it just bogggs
so its gotta be fuel or air? i wish i had money for a fuel filter so i could rule that out but it seems this pce o crap truck has alredy sucked every last penny out of my pocket. like i wouldnt care in the slightest bit if my truck gets stollen tonight...
