22R cam

New to the site doing a 84 22R rebuild bored.40 over rebuild kit from engine builder got his rv cam also. So i got a couple of questions i dont have a head yet so will a 22R cam fit on the 20R head if not i will stick with the 22R cause i already got the cam and will i have to do anything to the head such as bigger valves or springs or can i just leave the head stock and run the cam let me know if you have any suggestions on what to do

I'm almost 100% the cam will work in the 20R head. You will need to make sure you have the older 22R block though. I think with the '84 it could be either block.

This link will help, its been awhile since I read the article. You will get better flow with the 20R head.

85 was thew year with both blocks. If his is the 84 he's golden. Might consider the dual row timing chain conversion too. I remember a while back a thread asking about it. I believe the consensus was you can use the 81-83 timing cover on the 84-85 block and simply put an 81-83 timing chain kit on. Yes the 22r cam will work in the 20r head.

a stock 20r head on a 22r block will actually hurt the engine's power, unless it's ported and using bigger valves.

Dual timing chain would be stock at that time, so no need for a conversion.

For power steering look for a later year head as it became a more common factory option toyota just drilled and tapped all off the line. You can always drill and tap an older one.

I really like the 20r/22r hybrid if it wasn't so painful and costly I'd gone the same route for my 22re. DOA Racing sales a built 20r head but it is pricey. With the weber carb, header, and good exhaust your hybrid should be a nice upgrade.

but wont the pistons hit the head since the older style head was shorter and the block is longer?

That is why you have to get the older block. The one with out the "saturn" casting mark.

Remember though, not all 81-83's were dual row. It gets real squirrely as you get towards 82 and 83...my 83 is certainly not dual row. I've seen different people spell out the "definitive" guide to which one's had dual row and which didn't, and they usually don't agree. I'm not sure if my timing cover would support a dual row, or not.

Anyway...just sayin.

dual row vs single row doesn't affect the head. I don;t wanna waste time with the dual row conversion as I know there is a thread on here that mentions what you need. IIRC, it's just the 81-82 dual row timing kit and oil pump drive spline. I believe the timing covers were the same 81-84.

Some good previous post, search as sometimes there is the odd ball. Honestly I skimmed lots of information on the subject but really only paid attention to fact relavent to my situation. the Saturn casting for the block and the distance from the cam journal to the deck surface on the head are two crucial pieces of information to determining what you have. The reason I say to check is that Toyota has a tendency to use parts and motor in newer models to their supply is exhausted. So if your as lucky as me you'll have it all figured out only to realize you got the last odd ball. This is whay the exhaust manifolds are drilled to fit 22r or 20r heads.

Good luck.
