1980 solid front axle vented rotor conversion help
I am getting my parts together. I have a 1980 axle, it has the bottom truss to the U-bolts w/ 4.375 gears and the older style brakes. 6-bolt pattern that bolts to the hub and the hub has the wheel studs pressed in. I am having trouble getting the land cruiser vented rotors in 79-80 year range.
The newer type starting in 81 has the studs pressed through the rotors and pass through the hub and bolts with 2 bolts. My question is, IF I remove the old wheel studs and get the newer rotors w/ newer style "longer" studs, will they bolt up to my older hubs just using 2 of the bolts?
I'm thinking that it WILL work but I just want to check to see if anyone ran into any issues I'm not foreseeing here....

yeah dude... 79-80's are different...
Do me a favor though and see if a Tacoma rotor will slap over the hub, then use a IFS caliper...
whoops. After you do this...
ifs hubs on solid axle?

copy that... but only a 1/4" from working with Tacoma, floating rotors...
I can machine off the WMS... but that's more time and $$ plus it has to be exact...
It looks like if I machine off the exact thickness of the rotor face (.266), it will work...
.266 - .80 = 0.534 WMS hub...
what would be sweet is to machine the caliper and bring it fwd... even sweeter, find a caliper that will already work... or a rotor .266 deeper than the Tacoma's...

awe, man...
I just found out the 79-80 brake rotors are different from the 81-85's...
Could it be? Napa says the 79-80 rotors are 1.65" And the 85/ Fj60's are 1.89" A difference of .24" A 1/4 of an inch....
Does anybody have, or know if these will work? Assuming the calipers are the same, and bolted in the same place, it looks to me like the hubs a re 1/4" back...
Also, Marlin mentions something about this in his vented rotors/ IFS calipers upgrade product description...
"This kit also fits 1979-80 axles that have been converted to 1981-85 spindles."
???
EDIT: Or, oh kay-rap... does that mean the spindles and bearings are different on 79-80's?
EDIT: EDIT: According a Pirate faq, the bearings for 79-85's are the same... So no..

in summery, if you machine down the the outer edge of the WMS, you might be able to throw on a Tacoma rotor and use a IFS caliper...
This will make changing a Birfield and a rotor a snap!

a few more questions.... What lugs are those? And what does this do for width? I think I still would need wheel spacers. What would that do bolted to the outside of those rotors? They look to be a little loose around the lugs also...do they wiggly any, is that normal?

they are free floating rotors, so they will look like they are loose. they are designed to move laterally on the hub. this helps them line up with the brake pad better when the brakes are applied, ensuring a better braking surface.

SAS on a 1987 4runner, the axle I got is out of a 1980 model though. I see what your saying about the floating part but, once the wheel is bolted on its not moving anymore... I was saying it looks like it could rotate just a hair back on forth on those lugs is all. I'm still wondering my questions from earlier though. As far as width and lug length. I'm going to check on the taco rotors, I'm just wondering about the wheel spacers on the outside of them...

Yeah your IFS rear is gona be 3 inches wider than the solid axle front so 1.5" spacers are needed. You can use the standard type, or the sky manufacturing ones wich allow you to use the IFS hub, they are stronger too im pretty sure, thats what I got anyways. And for rotors I just got some new IFS vented rotors for our gen runner. Here is the link to the spacers I used, trail gear has just the normal spacers for relatively cheap, not sure on quality.

And a pic of mine after install

Yeah, I've already got spacers from Marlin. They go on the outside of the hub. I either want to find out about using L.C. rotors with the older hubs or this taco rotor thing. Its new to me, so I'm going to check on pirate for some more info on it tonight.

Found this....
This is a IFS hub with a taco rotor. What year taco rotors is everyone using? This looks like it will work similar to the idea above but with the caliper just on the outside. This guy used the stock caliper bolts and just bolted it from the back side. I think I'm going to go get a set of taco rotors after I find out which year to get and test the fit on both the 80' hub and the 87' hub and will find out what really fits.
Another question... I just ordered the rebuild kit for the front axle, will the bearings and seals interchange between the 2 sets of hubs?

Okay, I just took a tape measure to the 80' hub. There is right at 2 3/8" from the wheel mounting surface to the locking hub mounting surface. Can someone with a 81-85 style hub compare this to see if its really 1/4" different?

Also yes wheel bearings/races are identical between hubs.

Awesome! The guy who has actually done this! As far as grinding down the hub, did you use a lathe or a jig of some kind to keep it even or just wing it? If you just winged it do you have any issue with vibes? And what about your lugs? where they long enough?

I just winged it. No vibes at all, I don't think you could get it screwed up enough to cause a vibe. Not enough weight that close to the center to actually cause a vibe ya know? I am using aluminum wheels which have a thicker mounting surface where the lug nut goes so I would like longer lug studs but I don't think it'd be an issue with steel rims, it hasn't been an issue with my aluminum rims either...

I guess you saw my entire write-up on it? I just jumped in blind and solved problems as they arose. All said and done it took me a day and its been just as reliable as it was before. I've had it completed for about 8 months now.

What I saw was on Pirate4x4, it was a bunch of different people saying how to do it. You posted that this way would work and some guy told you that you had no idea about what your doing and you had never done this. Then you posted a pic and the guy had to eat his words! If you have the link or can tell me what its called I'll definitely go look at it.
