has anyone had a problem with their new 4 runner where after I have braked at a stop light, then it feels like someone has hit me, but not. It feels like the brake jerks a little, but I don't move...

 

Does this happen as you let off the brake? If so, its called axle wrap, and its time to lube the driveline.

 

Its a very common complaint with the 4th gen runners. Lubing the driveshafts should do the trick.

I've always wondered if the jerk you feel after you come to a stop could be the torque converter releasing? Any thoughts, anyone?

 

I have the same problem in my 3rd gen and it's been discussed many times. Basically it's the driveshaft running low on oil to absorb the moving of the drive shaft and therefore, when the drive shaft compresses after a stop (or right before a start), you can hear it hit it's "end".

 

The torque converter should be released before you reach "dead stop" the drive shaft really is the most common cause of this just like everyone else has mentioned.

 

This is a problem that Toyota has been trying to fix for some time (4th gen and 3rd and maybe even before). It has been written about here and in other Toyota forums.

The alloy that Toyota uses for the slip joint portion of the driveshafts takes a long time to wear and actually slip. Over greasing it does not fix it and can actually hurt your vehicle. Having it full of grease actually makes it as if it is solid. You want the space for give. I have an 03 4Runner SE V8 4x4 and Toyota switched-out my front driveshaft and gave me a new one to correct the problem, or really just reduce it. The new shaft still needed wear-time to smooth-out and not do the "bump." They changed the alloy to a softer one in the redesign of the shaft to address this issue.

It's only 3 months old.....I guess I can bring it back to the dealer, but some say this won't fix it....

Other thoughts from anyone?

It seems to happen when I'm on the brakes, And I just take my foot off slightly...feels like a slight jerk and someone bumping me.

 

At 3 months, you're within the 12 month, 12,000 mile adjustment period, when they should take care of any concerns you have under warranty.

Just take it in, and have them lube the slipjoints in the driveshafts.

My 02 Tacoma does this also. I lubed all fittings that I found and it still does it. Waiting on my recall then when I take it in I will ask the dealer what they think.

 

what kind of grease should i use to lube the driveshaft? i dont just want to take it in to the toyota place unless its absolutely necessary to have them do it.

 

Run of the mill multipurpose Moly grease, same used in wheel bearings. Can also use the Mobil 1 synthetic.

When my 99 exhibited this axle wrap problem, I hit every driveline zerk. They were all surprisingly dry at 60k miles. Pumped enough grease in to have it squeeze out whatever openings it could find. The slip yokes took quite a bit of grease. If you get too much in there, it just oozes out and slings a bit of grease under your car. No biggie.

Anyways, it took 3 or 4 days while the grease worked its way around before the driveline binding went away. Been smooth ever since.

"I went by my Toyota dealer today and with my 4runner up on the rack spoke with their head technician/specialist. He went online into their service database and printed-out the specs for the maintenance and grease required for the driveshaft and the slip joints for me. The specs require "NGLI 2 Lithium grease for the U-joints and the same with moly disulfide for the slip yokes" as khaug reported...but for 2003/2004!

Here is where it gets a bit different...he asked if I would let him leave it as it is...virgin as he put it...so he could speak with the So CA Toyota engineers as they had asked him if had any 2003 owners complaining about the clunk in the brakes and/or driveline. Seems they may want to take my driveshafts and give me new ones, or take the rig for a day of testing. He further said that filling the slip joints to the max with grease actually is harmful for the transfer case because the forces usually absorbed by the greased slip joint are transferred to the transfer case. They have had cases of cracked transfer cases because of "over greased" slip joints.
