wyoming shadetree needs advice

93- 22RE- changed my timing chain (with a new metal guide and new cover), new oil pump and water pump. put the distributor back in as before and the pickup started on the first try. sounded fine. for the first several days i only drove short distances, and the truck ran better than ever, very quiet and smooth. i even got compliments on how quiet it sounded.

last night i decided to drive go ahead and drive some more to let the engine get good and warm- as the engine warmed up the idle became irregular, a rhythmic up and down. the warmer the truck got (normal operating temp, right in the middle of the gauge) the worse the idle sounded. made it back home and it wouldn't re-start.

this morning i started it, sounded o.k., but as the truck warmed in the driveway the worse it sounded again.

is this just a timing issue? should i just take it in for a tune-up?

thanks!!

You can always double check the timing...I believe I have mine at 5 deg's. Be sure to jump the diag when you do the timing.
But if it's only doing this when it warms up you may have air in the coolant system. burp it real well and see what you get.

i have never tuned up a 22RE- and never burped the cooling system. do you just lay it over your shoulder and pat it on the back?

I'm not so sure burping the coolant system will solve your problem....although it is possible.

Before it's warmed up, it's running off the cold start injector; once it warms up & shuts it off, it sounds like your problems start. This is indicative of a vacuum leak somewhere. EGR issues can also cause your idle to cycle up & down.

To burp the system take the rad cap off (when cool) and squeeze the top rad hose the coolant should move about and start to push the air. do this a few times then start the vehicle and keep at it. Keep fingers away from fan, may come back missing a digit...
Anyway, just keep squeezing the hose and adding coolant. Cap it, take if for a ride, let it cool and again from the top.
That's how have done it and it's always worked for me.

Or just roll is on its side kick it 3 times and back up on all 4...

I was gonna suggest air in the cooling system also. Same thing happened to me when i did my timing chain..and and also today when i changed my heater core..lol. I burp my system by topping off the system and driving a few miles with the cap on only half way. Top it off when it starts running normally, and tighten cap. Not the "correct" way according to most..but it has always worked for me.
