Write-up\Website on pulling motor

Does anybody know where I can get information on how to pull out the 3vz from a 2nd gen 4runner? Are there any write-ups people have done that actually tell you part by part how to remove the engine?

The haynes doesnt really go into detail too good. But a chiltons or a factory service manual will do fine

I was thinking I'd just use the Chiltons manual, but I wasn't so much needing help on how to take off the parts, but I needed help on knowing which parts really need to come out of there before I can pull the motor. Ill just hope for the best, I'll be pulling the motor out in about 4 days.

First thing your going to want to do is drain all the fluids, then take out the radiator, and the fan. Make sure you pull the ac pump, power steering pump, and starter off. Then you will want to unbolt the entire intake plenum, but do not remove all of the vacum hoses, just pull it up and out of the way, I used a bungee cord to hang it off the passenger side fender. Then you can attach your cherry picker to the engine, to support it while you unbolt the trans and engine mounts. Good Luck!

I used a Chiltons on when replacing my friends v6. It list in order what parts you need to take off. Good luck, you'll learn a lot!

Is that so you can keep the AC system sealed? Because if you don't care about keeping the AC system sealed you can just unbolt the AC lines and leave the compressor on.

Never heard of anyone taking off the entire intake plenum before, but that may be easier if it keeps you from having to disconnect and reconnect that bird's nest of vac lines.

Best advice is to take lots of pics before you take it apart.

I've pulled a couple. First time is the hardest. Getting it back in isn't so bad though.

Definitely not the easiest motor pull I have done.

Thanks a lot, this will help. I've never done anything this big on a car, I'm 17 and my dad doesnt know a whole lot about it either, I'm hopeing I can do the whole thing in my garage.

Does anybody know about this site? http://techinfo.toyota.com/ I've heard many people talk about it, but does it have a section on removing the motor?

Also, should I pull the motor out with the trans and clutch connected still? Or is it easier to drop the trans before pulling the motor? I'm swapping it directly into another 4runner.

If it does it probably will be about the same info as this:

If you search this site somewhere on here are pics of a guy that removed the engine with the tranny still attached but it looks harder to me and you'll need an engine leveler for your hoist. Either way you'll probably need to roll it out of the garage to get the overhead clearance for the hoist:

Oh and you will need to remove the hood too. It's easy to do (just 4 bolts) but it was the only part of the whole swap I needed my neighbor's help with.

You can remove and reinstall the tranny all by yourself with one of these:

mt goat, My buddy is a mechanic and works on toyotas all the time. He told that was the easiest way he has found to deal with the intake. I basically got all of my info from him. He's super busy and I was too inpatient to wait. And yes my buddy told me that I would want to just unbolt the ac pump, and I used bungee cords again to hold it off to the side, without contaminating the lines.

KTM, I left the tranny in, supported by a jack stand. If you need any more help just PM me.

Alright thanks a lot guys, I'm feeling a little more confident about this swap. I'll most likely be back to ask a few questions more once I've started.

BumpinYota has some good info (on a posting) on a teardown (with pix) to do a HD replacement. Or you could just use a cutting torch.
