WOW Transfercase Flange Nut
I am finally getting at the transfercase rebuild in the 4runner. I pulled it out Sunday, and took pretty much all day cleaning it. I finally get to pull it apart tonight. I get the socket from work, and i punched out the punched part of the flange nut. I made the flange hold tool. I am all set, i get the breaker bar and give it hell. Nothing. I then get the high lift jack handle. Nothing. I put the flange holder in the vice and then put my 200 pounds on the handle, the tcase starts lifting off the table and I stop. I then try again and snap the breaker bar head off. Now I get the torch out and carefully heat the flange nut. I get it red hot. I wait a minute to cool a bit, then try again. Nothing. My question is, by hcance is the stupid nut a left hand thread nut? I havnt had a pinion give me this much problem, let alone a Tcase. THe case had 4.7 gears loaded in it before i got the truck, but DAMN that thing is kicking my arse tonight. I am gonna try again with the torch to heat it up, i was thinknig maybe they put locktight on there, i just dont want to damage the output shaft. Time for a beer.

Yep, I sure do know exactly what you're going through on this. No, it's not left-hand thread, but it can be damned near impossible to get off sometimes.
It's too bad you took it off the truck before trying. That just makes it harder. Not that it's much easier on the truck, but a little.
What you should have done was put the truck in 4H. Then locked the hubs and chocked the wheels. Then with any luck you could have used your weight and the breaker bar to break it loose. Better yet would be a super-duty impact wrench, which I'll assume you don't have access to.
Now that it's off the truck and on the bench, we're at the other stage. What you need to do now is use the tool to hold the other output flange, using the transfer case itself to prevent it from turning. Holding it in a vice isn't gonna do it. Put the thing on the ground. Then put the transfer case in 4H or 4L, doesn't matter here. Then get yourself a 3/4" breaker bar and a 3/4" 30mm socket for it(if that's the size it is), and try again. And by try again, I don't mean use your weight this time. I have another trick up my sleave.
You put the bar and socket on the nut. Then you go grab the sledge hammer. You take that sucker and whack on the handle of the bar untill it spins the nut free.
Hint: A little heat never hurts. Just don't smoke the seal, if you can avoid it.

Well after regrouping, they are off. Just had to use a little more heat on the nut. Then it broke free. No issues with the seals, i have new ones in the kit, i just didnt want to damage the output shafts. Now to let it cool. It is a bit hot to the touch.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

What size would this nut be on 1982 toyota 1st gen pickup? I have the manual and it doesn't tell me diddly. I have to go buy a larger impact socket..
