wont start unless ebrake is on HELP

Hey guys, so im building a toyota, finally got the big stuff out of the way, but something weird is going on, The toyota wont start unless the ebrake is on... and when you take the ebrake off the engine dies.... does anyone know why this is happening? lol. Also the wiring harness that the starter connects too, it has two green plugs that are pluged in, and then there are two white plugs, what does this go to? the truck was a Fuel injection, and is now crabed.. help please

First guess is that the wiring is mixed up under the dash and the clutch safety wire is hooked up to the e brake? I mean if something was amiss down there it might ause something like that, or a wrong ground wire? Something is up

Vacuum lines?

For what it's worth... my truck drops ~100rpm at idle after I start it warm, then let off the e-brake. IE: Warm start... idles fine at 800... let off e-brake... drops to 700, or 650 like clockwork.

My theory is that the rear drum actuation via the e-brake also moves some fluid in the brake system, and fiddles with the vacuum system tied to the brake booster.

I would check your brake booster and vac lines. Good luck!

Tap the starter with a hammer (gently) and see if it works. If it does, search starter contacts on here...

No, no! Don't buy a new one! Look up starter contacts in here, its an EASY $10 fix, and you keep the (hopefully) OEM starter! Don't throw down for a new one!

Yepyep, I'm on my phone, otherwise I'd dig up more info. Just need the contacts, I think most parts stores and stealerships should have them. Depending on which set ya get, I think a little soldering may be needed? Not sure on that, tho.

Hi CountryYota, You mean the starter solenoid (the part that's piggybacked on the starter)clicks? Or the starter tries to turn but could not?
Or do you hear relaysclick?

If relay, I have a post that clarifies locations of starter relay and circuit opening relay (power fuel pump) here

Also, If you check the FSM on a sticky in this forum, you will see that E-brake circuit does not have any connection with starting circuit. If e-brake affects starting, I would inspect for mixed up wiring/ground

Regards

That's either 1 starter contacts and maybe the related plunger or two the little wire that runs to it is loose. Most likely the contacts.

Read up on it here: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml
