if its coming from the rear i suspect you got a bad rear end gear

Check the fluid in the rear... replace it and see if that helps any. I have to agree with little runner.

If its up front it could be a few different things. I take it is a 3.0? Alt. could be a possibility but have you changed out the t-belt lately? Could the tensioner be causing the noise?

when its under a load the gears in back are pushing against each other.when ya let off in releases that tension.if its not the rear end i'd be surprised

start with the easy/cheap things first...

be sure & confirm thats where 1st.then just for giggles i would change the fluid & put in synthetic lube.if it has just started the noise it will go quite a while before you absolutely have to replace.when it is time you may be able to find a good used 3rd member & just change the unit out.or if you want to change ratio or add a locker this would be the time to do it.i just happed to have 2 3rd members used if they are the right gear
