windshield trim replacement

after spending some time in the heat (100 - 110 deg F) the top portion of trim on my truck's windshield started to pull away near the corner (this is a 94 pickup). This made sense when I went back to the place that last replaced the windshield asking about the glue and saw on the tube that it was rated for a temperature range up to 95 deg. So I got the top and the side pieces off after noting the rust developing under them, rusty metal primed and painted then set about to reglue the trim. The question here is what kind of glue to use that is strong enough to last in most conditions but not so strong it would destroy the trim the next time the windshield needs replacing.

Before going back to the glass place, the glue I found through searching for molding glue was 3M 08008 Black Super Weatherstrip Adhesive and used this for my first attempt. During the process, however, I discovered the length of the top piece had shrunk to an unusable length (prior to this, I was using a heat gun to straighten its shape), aborted the attempt to try and clean everything, but did manage to secure the left piece, which seems firmly, but maybe too firmly attached.

I moved to order an aftermarket replacement top piece (lucky the top is the only one available) and in the meantime figured it's worth asking what may be the ideal glue. The 3M weatherstrip adhesive seems a bit too permanent and is not at all easy to use, being a bit runny and almost impossible to clean up. The glass place had the glue that doesn't hold up with high temperatures but is applied with a caulk gun and the cheapest. Still a molding reseller on ebay recommended Dow U-418 Auto Glass Sealant which may be inbetween in strength but also the most expensive.

I used Dow Corning 995 and showed pictures on this thread.
The chrome trim is a rust maker in the long run (it is known) so if you don't care about the aesthetics, I would try different options.

Pretty sure this is a universal glued on trim.

Also have a '94 and that chrome trim was savaging the metal around my windshield -- rust all over. Pulled it off, stripped, patched, primed and painted (also used POR 15 in the channel) and then did this:
Bought windshield moulding strip Precision Parts WFS F799 RC ("Rain Channel") -- one continuous piece that covers top and both sides
Used DOW CORNING 795 in a caulk gun -- I can't find the thread right now, but there were a few +s for this round here on YotaTech
I kept the lower corner and bottom trim pieces (for now), used the DOW under those also.
Didn't take process shots, but can send finished pics if you want.
So far so good, but it was just a couple months ago. Anxious to see how it holds up through a salty Buffalo winter.

Another Vehicle Without Trim

I found another vehicle without windshield trim like that Jeep Wrangler I mentioned earlier, a new-ish Ford Transit.
