windshield chrome trim substitue
1987 4Runner DLX, just installed remann motor and much else under hood...leaking windshield, rusted area along track, Safelite replaced two years ago but noted lots of rust and no warranty. Body shop from insurance didn't want the job! Live in VT. some good info prior on YotaTech, Roger Brown/4 Crawler (Thanks)has nice description of repair but is there someplace that sells a replacement rubber molding of those awful chrome strips or does one have to fabricate a covering of vinyl and glue it on...? Was gonna remove chrome strips, clean remove rust, POR, reseal with silicone I guess and then try and put sommething in lieu of the chrome aqua attractors. Thanks for any ideas

I had my trim replaced with a rubber seal at my local windshield shop. As far as the rust in the windshield channel, my local windshield shop sold me some sealer. Might give that a try with your local shop.

letted,
Rubber trim may require removal of glass. If you don't expect saltwater in that gap, you may be OK with rubber trim.
If you don't mind the gap, leave it alone, left exposed, it would be easier to clean.
Silicone may be OK to seal / fill the gap between glass and body, but:
IF you ever replace the glass, urethane is the only structurally sound adhesive. AND
IF you ever use silicone to fill gap, you'd wanna find one without the wrong acid in it. I believe cheap caulking silicone has acetic acid. You don't want that
On mine, because I load kayaks (=saltwater) on roof, I removed chrome trim, installed rubber trim just to protect edge from stresses, trimmed flap off the rubber trim, exposing the gap, and filled with Dow Corning 995 structural silicone sealant. HERE
