why do fram filters suck
#3
personally I use a K&N, but they aren't cheap (like $11) I may naive, but I like to believe that you get what you pay for (fram = inexpensive)
Example: do you think that your truck gets the same service when you take it to a jiffylube, as opposed to when you do it yourself?
you might spend more money/time/effort doing it yourself, but you get better oil and filters (or at least you actually know what brand is on your truck), and not some kid trying to sell you wiper-blades and charging you $10 to fill your windshield washer fluid

All filters are paper or cardboard.
Hell, the only oil company that actually posts tests results, that i can think of right now, is amsoil.
Their filters are nano-fiber.... which allow more oil to flow through more quickly, and stop smaller particles than any other.
I work in a havoline lube shop. Purator makes havoline's filters.... I've seen all kinds of oil.
It all goes in yellowish... comes out black.
Change it every 3000.... or 5k if you use synthetic... and forget about it.

cigarettes aren't exactly good for the body but many people use them and among them many live to ripe old ages while there are others who live their lives with perfect diets and exercise die early. go figure. this topic has been beaten to death and there are those that will tell you not to use Fram or other "low quality" filters based on test results and filter media. these low quality filters still meet standards. what it comes down to is preference and marketing. if you feel that a filter is better and will be better for your car and you are willing to pay the premium, then go for it. if your want to read up more about filters, check out the bitog forums (google it).

Yet...being the key word. It takes a while for problems like poor filters to show up sometimes.
If anyone wants to go by "standards", take a look at FDA standards...then, look at the health of American people. Or on the back of the next box of Rice a Roni.

frams have crappy antidrainback valves which lets the oil drain back out of the filter when the engine is off, and then will starve the engine for oil for longer than a filter with a proper valve. atleast on an engine where the filter isn't mounted straight down.
one of the 3 levels of frams is decent, 1 has a bad antidrainback valve, and one has teflon. I cant remember which is which so I just dont buy fram. there are plenty of decent filters in the same $3-4 price range as the cheapo fram.
I usually go with purolator because i tend to buy my parts @ advance auto and thats what they carry as far as decent filters anyway.
interesting site on oil filters

i'm not suggesting that your truck will explode if you use fram filters, but what i am saying is that there are better choices in the same price range so you might as well use em

BTW I use Wix.
