So, I had the typical crossover/header Y connector to downpipe leak because I was lazy and forgot to replace the nuts and studs during the rebuild.
I went to replace them the other day and snapped off one of the studs at the base. I mean, there is NO way I can get any grip on it. So I have 2 studs and nuts holding in the gasket, but it's still leaking.

I'm annoyed, and I need help. Anyone have any ideas how to remove this stud? I'm thinking about just taking it to an exhaust shop and having someone else deal with it.

Suggestions?

 

Screw/bolt/stud extractor. Might work.

Either that or drill it out and retap the hole.

You got me there. Atleast 4 out of the 6 are pretty much out of reach of a drill aren't they. And the outermost 2 wouldn't be that easy either.

They do make drill bit extenders, usually 6" or 12". I have a 12", but it will only accept up to a 1/4" bit. They make some that will accept larger bits though.

The extension looks great, but how much force can you apply?

 

It was a hand-me-down. Not sure if it was in the lot of tools from when my grandfather(aircraft mech/auto mech/woodworker/logger) or step-father(auto mech/machinist/welder/fabricator)died. All I do know is at this point I've got 2 or 3 of just about everything. So I hardly ever need to buy tools anymore.

BTW, I might as well mention why the avatar pic, since I'm on the subject of ol' granddad. He was the crew chief on a B24 Liberator for the Army Air Corps(predecessor of the U.S. Air Force)back in WWII. Ain't she a beauty? Actually she was called "The Goon" by some(affectionately of course), "The crate the B17 was shipped in" by others(not so affectionately). So it's in his honor.

I love those planes as well. They are awsome to look at, I can only imagine what they were actually like in the air.
