So my front transmission seal (R150F) starting puking gear oil this week. I was taking out my transmission, and when I took off the transfer case shift lever I noticed this chunky green goop....

My thoughts are it is old grease that has solidified, but I would like the opinions of some other people who have taken these apart...

I really don't want to split the cases and open up the transfer case - but I obviously don't want to put it back together if something is going wrong.

 

That is your shifter seat. The stock oem ones turn into a mess over time. When you replace it, the shifter will get way tighter and you will be able to find a gear super easy.

 

This is on the transfer case lever - I do not see a part listing for a shifter seat. Does the transfer case lever have one?

 

I don't think the t. case uses a replaceable seat, the shifter ball just lays in a seat machined into the shifter base.

Look to me like it is just jellyed/decomposed grease that the last person put in when reassembling the unit.
I would carefully clean it out and forget about it. Maybe put a smear of new grease in when it goes together.
Many of the tranny and t. case shifters I have taken out show some rust on the shift rails underneath from water condensation that has got in over the years.

I could swear that I saw a vid where someone installed a quickshifter on their trans and said they installed the aftermarket Delron shifter seat on their transfer case. I think it was a Marlin Crawler install video.

I'd call Yotamasters and ask them. That's where I got my transmission shifter seat. I suggest them because unless something's changed Marlin Crawler won't answer their phone anymore.

 

If it was aftermarket, then maybe they used one with their setup.

I have looked through the service manual (I have a digital factory one) and the parts diagrams online - not a single one references to a shifter seat for the transfer case....

I pulled the control retainer off and cleaned everything out. I looked inside as far as I could, and I don't see any signs of it anywhere else. So I am not going to worry about it, and just put it all back together.

The tranny shifter and the transfer case shifter do not use the same components.

The tranny definitely uses a shifter seat, pretty sure the transfer case does not.

 

I found the video I thought it was mentioned in (not the one above) but when I played it back there was no mention of it.

 

Looks like old grease to me.

As long as there are no metal particles you should be good.

 

Its condensation mix with gear oil, No big deal as long as there is no harsh grit in it from dust, sand and rust.
Just wipe it out.
