What size are the rear speakers in an 88 4runner?
I got new 4'' rockford fosgate 2 ways in the dash, and am now wondering what size are the rear speakers? Any help would be much appreciated. I thought I read somewhere on here that there is an actual speaker box in the back wall there? IDK

If you want to fit bigger ones, make some sort of mount so you can put them inside the cup holders/pockets in the rear. They sit closer to the front so thats a plus to

IIRC, they are 5" speakers. You will likely have to make custom brackets, since the factory ones are fairly specific to the speakers.
Best way to do it, is build a little box that replaces the pocket in the rear (about 1/2 way up the rear seat). The very rear speakers are not enclosed, and sound terrible. I took some wood and built a plate to bolt the speaker to, then very carefully removed the pocket (without damaging it, for future install if necessary) and bolted the speaker in its spot. It works really well, looks factory, and I didn't have to cut any ugly unfixable holes in the panel.

here's an example of what you were asking about:
that's a piece of plywood installed in place of the factory speaker, then a 6x9" installed into the wood.
