Rear Deflector Question

Hello all (particularly WildBill),

I want to get the rear deflector for my 4Runner and I can't seem to find one around here that just uses 3M tape to mount.

I'll most likely have to get one where you have to <shiver> drill holes in the tailgate to mount.

My question is (to anyone who has one) how do you protect the drilled area from rusting? I'm thinking that when you drill in there you immediately take the paint off that area exposing the metal to air and possibly water. Are there are steps to prevent this other than using a primer/paint/sealant/rubber plugs in the holes before mounting it?

Is this or will it potentially become a concern?

Al

HBOSS Ive got just what your lookin for! I found this guard made by EGR. It used to be in the PP catalog but they discontinued it. You can still get it from this place though!
Rear dustgaurd

Here's the one on my truck!

another shot

This thing didn't use any bolts just a small hook that hooks in where the vents are by the side windows and other than that it uses 3m across the top. This guard will completely conceal the rear wiper blade too. Good luck finding something!

That's pretty nice, I had seen the EGR ones before and was interested but no place I've called locally so far can get it for me.

I'll keep calling around as I'd prefer the 3M tape ones to drilling into my paint.

The 3M tape holds well, even at speed, etc.? No threat of it popping off, is there?

I had one on my previous Cherokee, and the tape holds well. You wipe the area down with alcohol first to remove the wax, then stick it on.

Sounds good to me. I'll keep looking for one versus buying the one where I have to drill holes. I'm sure it holds even better but drill + my 4Runner = scary.

The Jaos or OEM spoilers does not require drilling! They get pricey with the painting...but since you gotta paint yer roof (I'm still feelin' yer pain  ) maybe work out a deal with the body shop dude to spray that too...since the spray gun is out?...hehe Good luck.

That Jaos rear spoiler is a beauty, I've been thinking about it but my gf's the one buyin' me the rear spoiler for my birthday in July and I don't want her to spend too much on me.

Heh, damn you Jason B! Playin' devil's advocate, how could anyone say that Jaos spoiler is not sweet?

That REALLY IS tempting... I'll show her tonight, just in case she feels like buying it....

Ok, I showed her and she loves it. She wants to buy it but then she asked how much it costs...heh

No go on that version of the rear spoiler/deflector, but it was worth a try.

Cool

HBOSS, you can also try the Lund Windjammer, it mounts with 3m tape and cost only $60. I just got mine and had it painted for $35 but I have not had time to put it on yet, have to wash the truck first. Sorry I don't have a picture but someone on 4x4 wire had it installed with pictures. Hope this helps.

Just found this forum the other day, now I have 2 forums to hang out at, much to my wifes dismay:

Thx for the suggestion, Paul. Searched the 4x4 forum and found the post. Just asking him to post a side-view picture so I can see what it looks like from that angle.

From what I've searched online, the Lund Windjammer is only available for 2nd generation Runners. I may be outta luck for that purchase.

Sorry bout that, I didn't realize they were for 2nd gens. only. I bought mine from driverfx.com they do sell a GTS dustguard for 3rd gens. for $48 though. They have a small picture of one on an explorer but have never seen one on an 4Runner.
