K&N open element cone air filter
I get torque from 2500rpm (K&N) vs. 2700rpm with the stock air box it seems. The effect is more noticeable when you bury the pedal. I didn't expect to see a gain until higher up. No perceived MPG gain. I got the filter for free, but I wouldn't have bought it.

tire pressure up from 30 to 45psi
I seems that it just rides harsher, no noticeable MPG gain yet (its only been one tank).

3oz. acetone mixed with gas
Theory is that gasoline vapourizes better with a trace of acetone in the tank. Its also an octane booster. In practice, I haven't noticed much of a difference. I think we might have also switch over to winter gas, so that may be messing with my results, but I'm going to tentatively say that it doesn't make an observable difference. With regard to smoke, acetone is extremely clean burning, so this may even help you truck pass.

keeping the tach below 2500 roughly
This makes a difference. While technically the engine is supposed to operate efficiently at about 3000rpm, there is more available power and I'm inclined to use it to accelerate faster. Keep it below 2500rpm, and you don't have the power to accelerate fast, so you don't. I once tried to keep it below 2000rpm, and I got 26mpg according to my odometer. Even if my odometer is significantly off, that's still very good mileage.

removed some weight
Took out the cargo box (75lbs + maybe 50lbs or junk) and noticed an increase in performance and mpg.

Advanced my timing
To 12, 10 and 8*. It just makes it ping. No power gains. Didn't keep it that way long enough to evaluate MPG.

regeared from 4.10 to 4.56
For my 31" tires. Made a significant perceived power gain. Now it seems like there's always a perfect gear to be in as the engine is kept in the torque band more often. I'm going to be doing a lot of city driving in the next couple years, so I'm toying with going to 4.88 for my 31's, the 22RE needs all the gearing advantages it can get. Maybe gained 1-2 mpg, not as much as I hoped.

conclusion
Fuel economy mods, beyond reducing weight, don't really do too much. The 22RE is already designed to be an efficient engine. Despite the 4500lbs+ weight, its still possible to get decent economy by driving like there's a raw egg taped to the top of the gas pedal. Keep pace with semi's when leaving the lights.

K&n-$30 definitely worth it
Basic tuneup- under $50 i think
Drafting on semis- free and very effective, find an empty one that is moving fast, ive found when doing this i use about 1/3 less throttle

I found that the 'super stock' coils/packs made a huge power difference on other vehicles (mostly big beefy chevy v8's)...

Tried it on my truck 4cyl, and to be honest, not sure if the coil made the difference, or all the repairs I have been doing nightly for months now. Anyways, its 30 bucks, and its nice and shiny red or yellow, worth a trial run in my opinion.

Key note: I have always put these coils/packs in with splitfire spark plugs, and oversized wires, not sure if it helped, or was a waste of cash... but the vehicles were always due for full tune ups anyway.... This truck, I used the 'stock' recommended plugs & wires instead of the extra price plugs n wires.

most effective way iv found to increase millage is to slow down 65 on the freeway rather than 75 adds a few mpg and accelerating slow helps alot as well

Lots of care to the motor, regular maintenance is a must.

With a stock engine and tires and a tonneau cover I get 22.xx mpg on the highway with a steady 65-70 mph. In these trucks how you drive seems to make the largest difference. My first two tanks I got 17mpg so I started paying attention more to how I drive. I was driving this truck like my previous car so I had to adjust my driving a bit to keep the mpg's around 22.

k&n drop in works good,
Regular maintenance,
MPG check ( fuel filters, plugs wires etc)
Re-gearing is amazing, but not always affordable
And of course driving like grandma,


IMO gas in just a pigment of my imagination, so i drive my truck hard, look after it though too, as for $$$ at the pump, I cross that bridge when i come to it.

Accel Plug Wires, slightly better milage

2.25" Exhaust & Turbo Muffler, slightly better milage, horsepower and torque increases in 2-4k RPM range

Carb Rebuild, slightly better milage

You get the picture, not much you can do except keep your airways and exhaust open, and your foot outta the throttle. Keep it tuned up.

started out with an 87 4Runner 22RE/auto 187,xxx miles with 235s and 16mpg

auto > 5spd swap ---- 16mpg to 20mpg (biggest and best power/mpg improvement...$500 junkyard/new parts)
Complete Tune up (21mpg ish, power gain!, response, happier engine)
235s to 32s ---- 20mpg to 18mpg (traded a set of 235s to my buddy for the 32s)
4.30s to 4.56s ----18mpg to 21mpg (junkyard 3rds $150 power/mpg much improved)
battery/air box swap with custom air intake ---20/21 mpg to 22mpg ( better response)
2.25" Exhaust with 2.25" Flowmaster ( slight power gain, no mpg difference, awesome sound)



consistent 21-23mpg city
now 198,xxx miles
haven't had any highway trips

Let's see..... I took the cross bars off the roof rack to cut down on wind resistance, installed a K&N FIPK intake and changed from the stock 265/65/17tires to the higher profile 265/70/17's when I upgraded to Firestone Destination AT tires. I air the tires at 37 pounds cold. Factoring in the fact the tires are 2" taller with 8% longer rolling diameter I got 19.99 mpg at 70mph (GPS) on my last 4,000 mile roadtrip. The single biggest difference was keeping the cruise set at 70 (GPS) MPH or lower. At 75 the mileage dropped by almost 2 MPG.
