So, the cig. lighter outlet in my 95 Pickup has no power. I've read A LOT of threads on here on the subject, but I'm still a huge newb here, and in mechanics and electrical junk, so I could've missed the key. So here's what I've tried:

-Plugging the 12v and ground into a new generic outlet from Advance Auto
(So not fusable link on back of outlet)
-Removing copper-plug-socket things and using a meter directly on the wires- Ground is grounded, 12v has no power
-Cig fuse in the box on the driver's side kick panel is A-ok.
(Other secret fuses, links?)
-Took the dash out to follow the wire the best I could and it looked intact until I lost it..

The previous owner said it always worked for him, and guesses that when he plugged the lighter itself back in to sell it (he used the outlet only for charging) that it shorted it out somehow. The guy said he would look at it, and he's a good Toyota mechanic my truck is incredible shape, but it's an hour away and he has more than just one screw loose.
Anyway, everything else has power it's just the outlet, and its driving me pretty nuts.

 

not real sure on a 95 pu, but my 99 4rnr has a secondary fuse under the hood in the forward fuse panel, good luck.
also if your comfortable enough you can always wire it (fused) to have constant power from a batt source.

 

I had that same problem. wired in a couple new ones, nothing. I was getting power though from the 12vlt with a test light. I just wired up an external one that had three plugs and a usb port. way better thatn the stock. Its very easy. ground and power. unles your trying to go back to stock style.

 

A good thought on under-the-hood, but if it is the same one I'm thinking of it's half relays and half fuses and all of them are engine related (EFI etc)
Is the box you're talking about on the passenger side?

Edit: Yes! actually I bought one very similar to wire direct to the battery, and to mount above the Ebrake, but for some reason I just want the stock one usable too. It might be nice to have something hooked up that I can leave in and not worry about drain.

 

well on mine its on the driver side and does have the efi fuse also but it may be on the other side in your 95 as i said mine is a 99 4rnr. Its very easy to wire new ones in, all you need is power (preferably fused) and a ground. All you need to fuse the power is a pos wire with a built in inline fuse or wire through any type of inline fuse or minibox

 

Ok, so I could just ignore the original wiring for the lighter and run new wires with a fusable link from one of my fuse boxes? I know there are open spots on at least that one under the hood.

also before you do all that work let me ask you a dumb question, did you check the outlet for power while truck was off, or with key on, or both?

id just hot lead it to the battery i have the 3 cig lighter hookup in mine and one in my tdi worth every cent only use the stock one for my xm radio so it kicks on when i turn the key

i know what you mean on just haveing everything work just wright though i try to get all my vehicles like that

 

yeah you should have power with the truck on so you can wire it to have power all the time or you can wire it to come on with the ignition, just depends on how you want it to work

 

Ok pretty sure I will do the hot lead too, mounting in the e-break tunnel thing, but how do I rewire this stock one and be sure it is switched? Does running it through the fuse box achieve this?

 

Could run a whole new setup, or tap off another positive wire. I would used one that not being used. like if theres a plug for you clock and you dont have a clock. Or for cruise if you dont have cruise. Tapping off one that is being used sometimes* likes to blow fuse's and makes thing not work corectly.

 

(switched) find an ignition controlled wire and tap into that, run a fused wire setup from that to the plug or whatever your hooking up switched
