I run a TRD Level 1 cam in my 22RE. Works well and is smog legal where I live:

engbldr's 268c torkr is a man-eater. Made my little pup get out and pass like a champ. Easily shaved off a downshift in most if not all situations. And he was very easy to deal with and had excellent speed and service.

It was 89 for the cam. But then I got a gasket set, new head bolts, and a timing set with steel guides. Total was like 250 for parts. I spent almost that at the machine shop to get the head cleaned, tanked, checked, and have a broken stud fixed.

I went with the timing set because 22r's have a tendency to wear thru the plastic guides and eat the front covers. With the steel setup you don't have to worry about it.

I've got like 115k on the motor 10k on the cam. Definately worth it. As you can see in my sig, headers are on the horizon. The only other thing I want to get is an electric fan so I can ditch the belt driven one. It's a pretty huge blackhole of power.

She still idles like stock. My understanding of the cam profile is that this is a very similar cam to what came with trucks that had the campers on them. Just a whole sh@t ton of torque. As soon as I get a free weekend I'm gonna dyno my truck. I had 115ft/lbs and 87 hp. I'm very curious to see in numbers what the improvement was, because there definately is a seat of the pants change.

I have the Crane cam which is the same as the TRD Level one cam. I have Downey header and the cam with no cat with 2.25" tubing. It is on my 87 with a carb and it works great. It idles very good and not too rough. I think this cam would be better for carb than FI.

on my '79 with the hybrid engine/268 cam, it sounds beautiful at 900RPMs. nice and smooth, with a little lope just to tell you it's there

although it'll be better when i get rid of my cheesy temporary cherry bomb/downturn directly off the header, though. probably will have more torque as well.

I'd like to know what kind of numbers it gave you too. I'm eventually gonna rebuild my motor and I'll proabably get the stuff from engnbldr so I guess I'll get that cam.

I'll probably get to the dyno in 2 or 3 weeks. End of march at the latest.

Sounds like I need a cam in the near future. How's the gas mileage with some of the above mentioned cams?

Pre correction I get 17-20 mpgs in hilly as sh@t western Maryland. Now corrected for my 31's you're looking at 18.5-22mpg and I drive hard and fast with a pretty heavy foot on the skinny pedal.

Also I've gotten a huge improvement when pulling my motorcycle trailer, which was the reason for looking for more power and efficiency. I can pull my loaded 6x8 and run down the highway at 65-70 mph and still get uncorrected 15-17mpgs depending on terrain.

Oh and if I head to the eastern shore, where it;s much flatter, I can easily get 22mpg in town and 25-26 out on the higway.

I'd probably do better on mpgs if I didn't have the pushbar and sunvisor. They both bring alot of drag.

It is not the brand of cam that is important more the lift and duration for what you want to do with it that is what you need to look at.
