Weird cooling issue w/ 22re

Hi guys, new to the forums here, just recently bought a 91 Toyota Pickup 22RE 2WD A/T to use for our mt. biking trips. My dad borrowed the truck today and he told me that whenever he took the truck up to 70 - 80mph, the temperature needle would start to climb. I am assuming that the radiator is clogged (but can a bad rad cap do this also??). I also noticed that it takes a really long time for the truck to achieve normal temperature (usually about 15minutes??) is this normal also?? what can you guys recommend me to check?? thanks, aight peace

- Bert

ps- I did a search and didn't seem to find anyone with a similar problem as me.

Does it over-heat when the heater is on? Check this out: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...tml#Thermostat

if you just bought it its usually a good idea to swap fluids. I would drain and flush the rad, replace the t-stat, and replace the cap.

Sounds like your t-stat is no good as it should only take a few min to warm up. Also your rad is probebly on its way out.

Also check out the fan clutch. I have had the same symptoms you describe, and it turned out to be the fan clutch was not working right.

I was going to say sounds like a t-stat, fan clutch could be a good idea too. But yeah when having these issues, alwaysa good idea to go ahead and do a rad flush.

the fan shouldn't make a difference at 80mph as it is only used to pull air across the rad when the engine is idling, or going very slow

Yeah thats why I didn't mention the fan clutch, cause usually after 40mph (I believe) the fan isn't needed anymore... I am going try and find time to do the thermostat and a coolant flush this weekend, any other input would help also, thanks aight peace
