Cool weird battery issue!!

Alright so buddy b4 me replaced the alt in my truck! The fuse panel under the hood has no alt fuse and it looks like it was ripped out!! (All broke to poop) now there is a wire running from the alt to the pos post on my battery donno why but if I leave my truck set for a day my battery will be stone dead!! Anyone know what would cause this to happen with the truck not running? Could the battery be bad? Any info would be appreciated! Thx

If I remember right you can take a full charged battery and removed the positive terminal and then touch the terminal to the positive post on the battery if there is a big arc then something on your truck is pulling power from it. do this with everything off. If it doesnt then I think autozone or checkers have a battery tester they will let you use for free. Hope this helps...

Go get the battery tested although I'm willing to bet that something is draining it. It might be helpful to take a look at someone elses rig and see what the alt fuse looked like so you can replace it.

That right there is the only thing I hate about buying a used 4x4. Folks tend to dig into them trying to make them better for offroading (lights/etc) or they try to fix something without ever reading a damn service manual.

Don't even get me started on the crap I've found under my dash.....

heh. The stereo wiring job in my 4runner was a mess. I swear there were five 1-1 splices in the aux power line in a distance of a foot.

Yeah I was trying to clean up a mess under the steering column and found a big black plug that was undone. So I plugged it in not realizing it was an aftermarket alarm. I almost killed myself trying to get out of the truck when that stupid thing went off.

It is now, and forever will remain, unplugged.

Hell the worst I've ever seen was on a hot rod (67 Chevy pickup) that had about 30 owners over the years. When my neighbor got it the very first thing we did was pull every scrap of wire out of it and put in an EZ harness. You'd be surprised how many things still work on an old rig when they get good clean power to them.

If buddy was messing with things under there he may have bypassed the diode to stop the battery from draining back through the field in the alternator. Look up a schematic for your truck and make sure things are going where they are supposed to before you replace the whole fuse block. If wiring schematics scare you then find someone with the same truck and trace all the wires from the alternator to make sure they are going where they are supposed to. Also if your alternator feels warm after a couple of hours of the truck being off that is a sign that it is draining you battery through the field.
