Slim Jim Shims
Made these to go under the stock hardened shims. In all cases, after the cams were ground and re-installed, I had too loose a lash. Colt cams gives you a .024" shim to place under the toyota stocker. I figured I could use the thin stock to cut the same size as the items from Colt. They are nicely captive under the stock shim and should work. I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work out, I have a record of the shims sizes required and available at CHS.

Still isn't gonna change the fact flat stock isn't heat cycled/tempered etc etc. I know I wouldn't want the junk that flat stock leaves in the head when it wears down. When they fail, goo luck with just getting the CHS stuff as your most likely gonna need a new head/cams at the very least, possibly even an entire motor. Not something I would try.

Slim Jim Shims are OUT
Extreme - that's the input I need. I think you're right. The mild steel shim stock won't hold up for long. Heading out to the garage to remove them and figure out which ones to order from CHS. Thanks for the input.

Take my advice and don't try to mickey mouse some shims under the stock Toyota ones. A local machine shop re-did my heads and put extra shims under there. Within 5 minutes of start up one shim was spit out and mangled a lobe on my cam. The reason being the extra shim the machine shop used wasn't exactly the same size as the Toyota shim. It was able to rock in the bucket and the cam lobe spit it out. The colt cam shims have never caused me any problems. In most cases you have no choice but to use them since the cam lobe is ground down and Toyota doesn't make a thick enough shim.
Finally have mine back together after 5 months. Forgot how loud she is.

Weasy's Cams
Thanks Jason;
I've already ordered (close to) correct sized replacements from CHS. I see you've got the same cams and a set of headers on your 3.0.
Two questions for you:
How do you like the LCE ceramic headers?
Where'd you order them from?
Actually, more questions:
Did you do the valve lash setup yourself?
How close together did you get the lash?
Where'd you get the replacement shims?
Cheers.

I also have these cams installed. I ported around all plenum, intake and head openings using a dremel and got in about 1 3/4". I was told, but did not do the lip around the valve itself.
I will say I had the cams and shims adjusted at a reputable engine shop and within 3 months, I had under 75 psi in 3 cylinders. Now to get my warranty out of it, I had to take the heads off and take them back in. F that!
I did it myself.Luckily I also have numerous extra buckets and pucks. So the shims given with the cams,3 had to come out and re adjusted. [IMG]

I have done the valve lash before but had the lash setup by the guy who rebuilt my heads. He supplied the shims to get everything into spec. I have bought them from Toyota before but the pricing is terrible. About $30 for one shim.
If anyone needs a machine shop I know a good guy in abbotsford. Great work, fair prices and quick turn around. Let me know.
