Wow, I have heard otherwise about the L52, but I am going to check that out. Do you have any links supporting the L52 as a stronger tranny Palmer? I am interested. I think my buddy has a an L52 in his backyard. I read lots of posts about people putting W56s in their 1st gen trucks to rid themselves of the L50 and L52.

i dont really have any outstanding technical info supporting the L52, like i said before the W56 looks a lot better on paper but we have eaten up a lot of those W56's here in bend. If harry chimes in he had one in his 87 that he absolutely destroyed and replaced with an R150. Our friend marlo swapped a few of those W's into his first gen and ripped them to shreds. I rebuilt an L52 with a friend and its behind a 383 right now with no problems. I myself have a W56 behind a 327sbc but i havent driven it with this setup yet and frankly i never intend on trying it.

I think it really depends on what you consider "strong" about the tranny, because there is both external strength of the case and external components, or integral strength IE how much torque the innards can handle before they explode.

frankly i dont think ill ever use a toyota manual other than an R-series, they are so much stronger its not even worth f'ing with the other trannies.

Good to know. Reasonably speaking running a stock 22r or 22re in front of a W56 you are fine. Once you start getting into higher torque/hp specs there is trouble to be had. Sound fair? Like I said before, the W56 is rated only to about 200hp at the crank. Not much, but plenty for a stock 4 banger. You boys must beat on some rigs up there, eh? Nice job.

I would like to hear from your boy though. I am still curious.

Yeah up here we manage to break things in some pretty outstanding ways...

Most of the trannys that marlos truck went through were either completely broken in half in the middle of the case or had blown out the countershaft bearings and dropped the whole unit. This is what happens when you jump SFA truck into huge rock gardens at high speed
