V6 vs. 4 Cyl.

I haven't seen a post anywhere on this, but I was wondering, which is better, the V6 or the 4 Cylinder?

I know there has to be pros and cons to each, but I was wanting to know in more detail about each.

If there is a thread about already, please give me the link. Thanks!

3.0 and the 22r's (all variations)

ive always loved my 22re. It isn't neccesarily fast but it does it's job and refuses to quit. It's a bit torqy but isn't a race car. although it does seem to be faster than my dads runner which has the 3.0 6, but i think there's something wrong with it. Either way the 22re's easy to work on, rarely needs work, and even if there is something wrong it still will get me up the trail and back home.

The 22RE is generally regarded as bullet-proof and torquey for a 4cyl. It does have it's share of headgasket issues, but is easy to work on and gets good mileage.

The 3VZE has 4 cyl power and gets V8 fuel economy, however, it is very smooth. IMHO, it's unfairly maligned for its headgasket issues. It is a NIGHTMARE to work on, but represents a significant power/torque increase over the 22RE, which is critical in a heavy rig like a 2nd gen 'runner.

All things considered, unless you place a high value on acceleration (if so, don't buy a 4Runner), the 22RE is probably a better engine. That said, neither engine is perfect.

22RE fan here, they take a licken and keep on ticken..i dont think there is a single person out there ( at least here on yotatech) that will say the 22r's are no good... though i did drive a 3rd gen runner with a 3.4 the other day and made the decision that when my 22re finaly dies that is what will replace it. personaly though.. ditch em both and go for a 1UZ!!

yo wont really go wrong.
i blindly purchased my 3.0 not even researching and am fairly pleased. I don't know why people hate but they do. and dont let other people's opinions make up your mind. both are equally good.

Just get which ever one you want. Both are weak. Both seem fairly reliable. Just get a Toyota

I don't have 3.0 Experience, so I can't speak for it.

As for the 22RE..Had mine about 6months so far, it has 225k miles and the cylinder head has never been off. Doesn't burn a lick of oil, doesn't smoke, runs great, plugs always look fine when I check them etc. Power is horrible, but power also breaks . They're a good quality, dependable, mostly bullet proof motor from what I've learned.

I too have decided when the times come for a heart transplant that the runner will most likely recieve a 3.4 as well. That extra power would be really nice to have. I hate having to tach it out to get up a hill.

I've had 2 3.0 V6's rigs. I'm on my 2nd V6 truck now, and And can I've had no problems with either 1. They've put up with the abuse I've put them thru, flawlessly. The 3.0 does it's issues, more so than the 22re, but I wouldn't give it up. I've put almost 400k on my 1st 3.0 rig, and the rig in my sig has almost 300k. No problems.....yet

i bought my truck because it was a v6, i didnt know why i just knew i didnt want a 4 banger. now im not saying the 22re is bad i just prefer the v6. iv had no problems with it, love the power, and love the way it sounds, im not at all a fan of the ricy 4 cylinder. iv even had guys ask if i had a v8 swap, no joke. im running 185k and still pushing without a single problem. go with the v6

I have 420k now on my 3.0 V6. I am not going to say nothing has gone wrong as that is a lot of miles for any engine and parts do have a limit life span. But I got the RPMs up to 5.5k today. I normaly don't like to go past 5k.

And a v6 does have more parts then an i4 and so, is more complex and harder to work on. But then again, you have a easy to change timing belt, over a hard to get at timing chain.

care to enumerate what the difference in moving parts is between the 22re and 3vze?
You could say two more rods and pistons and 4 more valves, but the 22re has 8 rocker arms that the 3vze doesn't have....
