ujoint breaking??!?!?

hey guys

well I think my rear transfer case side ujoint is on its way out, which is why I hear popping and bad vibration sounds.... now i just did my rear lift recently and am putting in my front lift in 1 week.... ever since the back went up the 4 or so inches I have had a problem. I am kinda thinking since the front is down and the back is up, this would increase the angle on that ujoint would it not? I have never heard of others having ujoint problems with just a 4 inch lift. so axle guys let me know what I should do.... buy a new ujoint? get a wrecker one? ar get a new drive shaft??? hell I dont know really... thanks

Make sure it is the u-joint and if so replace it. With a 4" lift you "might" need some drive shaft lengthening.

how to tell

ok thanks wabbit, how can I tell.... I grabbed onto the thing and wiggled it, and it seemed a little loose, which is what gave me the idea that was the problem in the first place. it didnt move like 1/2 an inch or anything , but it definately moved somewhat. the other ujoints dont move at all so I figured that was it. hey wabbit side question, can I get your stuff in canada?

Looseness and noise are the biggest ways. Get someone else to listen while you drive it down the street to pinpoint the racket. It was obvious to someone standing still and not in the vehicle that it was the u-joint as they could isolate it much easier.

Prices on the website are to the 48 states...Canada is a bit more on shipping that it all. Let me know what you are interested in via email/PM and get me an addy and I can do you a quote.

Thanks.

Another way to tell is to remove the 8 bolts (4 from the front yoke, 4 from the rear) and drop the driveshaft out, then drive around in 4WD. If the noise goes away, probably your rear U-joints. I did both of mine for around $70 CDN.

ya its only the top one, but i guess I could do em both,..... the bottom one is fine cause I got longer upper control arms so there is not angle on the joint at all.... the top one is at about 30 degrees I would guess. good idea on the taking it off and driving around.. i will try that this weekend

General rule on u-joints... If one of them fails, the other isn't very far behind. As cheap as they are just do 'em both
