trying to make it up hills.
Ok i have a 90 22re on 33's with stock gearing i believe. I drove to yosemite a week back and that is the first time i really tried to make it up hills and man was it a dog. I had to shift down to third a couple of times. My question is I need to drive to reno this week for a family emergency. And i know going over the pass is going to be a huge pain. Do you think if i through 31's under there that it will help getting up the hill? I know regearing is what i ultimately need to due but funds cant afford that right now. Any help is appreciated. thanks

I've got a stock 88 4runner (don't know the ratios- haven't cared to check) that came with 28" stock and I've got 31's on it now. I see a loss of speed and have to shift to 4th, on anything over about a 2% grade (two feet up for every 100 feet forward) and anything over 4% and I'm hard-pressed to keep 4th and 40mph, but 3rd will keep 60. I don't think you'd be that much worse of than I considering I managed to pull 300+ miles out of one tank of gas from home to Fresno while winding it out in 3rd most of the way up the Grapevine / I-5. I also made it from Carson City to Sacramento (Rancho Cordova actually) on about 1/2 tank.
No doubt you will not fare quite so well, but don't be afraid of revving the 22re above 4000... unless you're burning lots of oil and loosing coolant. And even then, I'd be scared with better gears.
If you go with the 31's you will probably be alright... and probably even with the 33's- just keep the 33's air'd up well.

31's on my stock gears, and on large hills (this is Florida mind you, my "large" hills may be nothing compared to what you're talking about), I quite often find myself downshifting into 4th. 3rd is sometimes needed over large bridges; for the local guys in here, the bridge to get over to MI from the PSJ area, that can require 3rd sometimes, unless there's not too much traffic and I get get some speed up first to help the accent

out of curiosity... how is it you have a 4" Rancho lift and Downey LT and don't appear to be any higher than I with my ProComp 4" lift? You have the bars relaxed? It's probably been brought up, but I'm just now looking at your avatar. Is it the 33's?

Ok thanks abe. I dont have a tach. So i dont know the rpm's i shift to sound. But the engine runs great just rebuilt and bored 40 over. Its just I drove my jetta over the pass and i still had to downshift on occasion. So I was worried about the yota because it lacks balls.

I think 31s would fair better than the 33s. There are some steep hills just south of the city I live in in a mountain pass about 20 miles long. I think there are a few 4% and 5% grades. I have driven my truck with both 235/75r15s and 31x10.5 tires. with the 235s I was able to hold 5th up most hills doing about 55-60. with the 31s I drive through that area in 4th and usually have to downshift to 3rd on a few hills. 33s on stock gearing would be fun....

Yes, it will. Pre-'95 Toyota trucks need to be geared the same or lower than factory. Its still going to be a bit of a dog with 31s, but it will be better than 33s without a doubt.
