truck idles and WOT, nothing in between.

I have a 1990 toyota pickup 22re that developed a problem about a week ago. The truck starts up and idles fine but as soon as you rev it up, it wants to die, or if you put a load on the motor in gear it wants to die..unless you push the pedal to the floor, then it takes off and revs up great. I was thinking maybe TPS or AFM but I dont get a check engine light. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Have you checked the o2 sensor? When you're in closed loop....ie, not idle or WOT, it uses the o2 sensor to maintain fuel mixture.

Check timing first and then do a simple TPS check using a multimeter and a service manual. My initial guess is that your TPS is so out of whack that it doesn't realize it's out of idle until you completely open the throttle.

Basically, yeah the ECU thinks you're in open loop because a sensor or something is way out of whack.

If you'll simply unplug your TPS, go for a drive and see if it's better. If you unplug your TPS, your truck will go into open loop. If it's better, TPS problem, if it's not any better, better look elsewhere.

Thanks for the help guys, I metered the TPS and it metered OK, i will unplug it and see if that helps any though. Also I will try to get a different o2 sensor to put in. As far as timing goes, doesn't a clean idle and clean WOT mean timing is OK? I have never checked timing but I will look up how to do it.

No. A timing light is $20. http://www.harborfreight.com/xenon-t...ight-3343.html That, and a multimeter, is part of the minimum equipment you need if you want to work on your own vehicle.

Ok, so we figured it out, turns out the fuel pump was going out, it was only pushing 20psi when it should have been 35. Changed pump, runs beautiful again, thanks for you input guys.
