Troubleshooting 3vze after rebuild

throw some timing at it. W/ valves and cams this engine likes a lot of advance.
I'm running 28 deg on mine and only thing stopping me from cranking in a little more is that it's out of stroke and going to the next tooth is too far.
I time them by increasing the advance until it the idle starts to drop, then back off a little. Use your 'seat of the pants' dyno.
Oh, and get yourself a timing light.

I found the same thing. First of all we just set the distributer so it would run and pulled it out of the garage. After a bit we decided to check the timing and saw it was way advanced, like 25* or so. We dropped it down to 10* and it would barely run. So basically I'm right around 28* as well now. Wasn't too sure about it but it seemed to be what the engine wanted. Is it ok to run regular gas that far advanced???
I took her to work today. Damn does it feel different. I'm still looking for the clutch every once in awhile, and drive throughs are pretty low now. It's been about 3 years since I've driven this truck so I forgot how high it sits. Nothing has been done to the suspension but it seems way taller than those Rangers...almost even with fullsize trucks. I love it......now on to the fun stuff.

Hey Jason - give me a ring when you want some quality fluids. I can have you some good synthetic gear lubes and some new auto tranny fluid in about 5 days. That crap that has been sitting in your tranny, diffs and transfer case the past few years can't be doing anything any good. So when are you getting your exhaust? Are you gonna get a 2 1/4" high flow cat too?

I'll will be in touch for sure Scott. I know I need new fluids but not ready for the cost right now. Especially the auto transmission. I am looking into an exhaust, most likely the one from LCE. Not sure about high flow cat or a test pipe. Do these engines run ok without a cat? I've heard yes and no. Guess I'll need to read up a little more before I order.
What about you? Ready to spring for those headers yet???

Jason I'll send you an email with some Amsoil prices for fluids specific to your truck. I bought Jay351 some oil recently and it worked out to $7.85 a quart after taxes and shipping compared to $11.19 a quart after tax at Crappy tire as an example. Headers are definately still on the list, don't worry.
LCE sells a 2 1/4" - 17.5" long cat with flanges, which I think is the right size for our trucks (length wise from flange to flange I Mean). MIght want to consider that?
