transfer question case again

on my 89 4x4 22-re/ 5-speed do the transfer case shift on the fly to 4x4 HI ?
I always thought it did but about a week ago it was cold and the road was snowy and it would not shift into 4x4 hi, it would just grind. At a complete stop it will go in real easy both hi and low, but soon as i start rolling it just grinds when trying to go to 4x4 hi. I just checked the transfer case oil and it was full. I guess my next thing is to swith to synthetic ?

if manual hubs, you should be able to switch into 4wd up to 50 mph. 4lo under 5 mph with the clutch in. or stopped in neutral with an auto.

if your diff is screwed up, changing the oil type probably won't do the trick. its worth a shot, but you said it was full, so it could just be the diff itself.

Here we go with that synthetic crap again. If you smell bad, do you take a shower or just spray on calogne? I like to fix the problem, not just pour synthetic on it and hope it goes away.

my reasoning with the synthetic crap is..... with the really cold temps the dino oil could be be thicker making the engagement tougher.

No synchros in the t-case to speak of. As long as the front hubs are locked and the front axle is spinning the same speed as the rear axle (as would be the case with same size tires and similar gear ratios), that syncs up the front drive portion of the t-case. Mine will shift back and forth w/ no problem at any speed. No need to use the clutch, just pull back on the shifter while going straight with light pressure on the gas.

it depends which case...gear driven you wont be able to shift at much, if any, speed. chain drive cases can shift at "normal driving speeds"

I have a gear driven case and can shift fine at low speeds, but it tends to bind if you make sharp turns or go over dry pavement, and requires backing in a straightline for a bit to unbind before shifting back into 2hi
