Tranny Removal ---> HELP!!!

So, I'm knee deep into my 5-spd swap, and have hit a stuck point. Pulling an A340F tranny + t-case out of an 86 Pickup with a 22RTE.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the the top two bellhousing bolts, and the dipstick bolts.

Any one have any tricks to pulling an automatic tranny without pulling it and the engine together.

Thanks

drop the cross member down with the tranny with a jack and you should be able to get to the top bolts, from under the truck with a few extensions or through the top where the sifter comes through.

I just used a box end wrench on the top two bolts from on the of the engine, put that thing on there and make sure its tight and put like a pipe on the open end side and push/hammer till it come loose.

I moved the engine forward and got them from inside the engine bay, but I was taking the engine out anyway.

not really that easy without a body lift.

the crossmember removal is the way ive always done it... a wobble and extension works wonders.. i have an impact wobble that makes it easy to simply ring them out with an impact gun once you pull the crossmember.

How to remove transmission.

1. Disconnect and remove driveshafts.
2. Disconnect all electrical connectors and tie off out of the way.
3. Drain transmission and transfer case, have a cold libation and smoke.
4. Disconnect shifters.
5. Disconnect cooler lines and plug off or blow through lines with compressed air to empty cooler.
6. Remove starter.
7. Remove torque converter bolts.
8. Support transmission and remove transmission mount bolts.
9. Remove cross member.
10. Lower transmission and remove top bell housing bolts with a long extension and ratchet or impact gun.
11. Raise transaxle a little and secure on removal jack.
12. Remove remaining bolts and lower jack slowly making sure wires are unplugged and not to catch on anything.

What you really need is a GOOD set of 1/2" drive universal flex sockets. Those cheap flex joints and sockets just will not cut it for real work, they are for weekend tinkering around the house. Those three piece flex joints and sockets are only good for places you can really get straight on anyway. This is a serious job requiring serious tools. I have never had to remove ANYTHIHNG inside of the truck to remove an automatic transmission and you shouldn't have to, but I am set up to do this and if you are already going to be removing the shifters anyway try to go through there.

If you have the correct tools you don't even need to see the bolt to remove it. Just work your hand up there and put the socket on the bolt with a 8 inch extension on it. Then stick the longer extension up to the short one and remove bolt.

I've always used swivel sockets and a long extension from underneath for the bellhousing.

take all the shifters out since your swapping to a 5 speend and get a 3 foot extension. go under neath ad get the socket on there and place in on top of the tranny, now go inside the truck grab the extension and get a breaker bar on there and they come right out
