Tranny leak

I have a '92 runner with about 250,000 on it. Early last year I took it in for a routine maintenance on the tranny. No problem until about a month later when I noticed a leak, never had one before. The place that did the original work told me the tranny was in need of a rebuild because the leak couldn't be fixed. Now, I also had the engine top end rebuilt just last month after it sat for almost a year and the guys who do all my work also said the leak couldn't be fixed without a rebuild or ? The tranny leaks a little in drive but much worse when in reverse. I know I need to do something about this soon but really can't since I just put out alot on the engine rebuild. My question is would it be better to rebuild or get a used one? The first guys quoted me about $800 where my regular guys said it would be fairly costly for them to do it. Is there something I can add to the tranny to slow down the leak or maybe there is a loose bolt I can tighten down? I would like this to wait for at least 6 months but would also like to drive it. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike

I not really sure but it seems to be coming from the rear of the tranny right where the skid plate is.

could be the seals are bad and are in need of replacment and that should solve the problem

holy moly find a new mechanic. check the cooler lines being that you said reverse is worse. reverse requires i think 125 psi to get that baby to go backwords. or check the seals. remove one of the bolts that goto the tranny/transfercase if the rear out put is leaking you will see fluid appear. or if ya got an a340h check the pinoin seal

If this is the problem then should the tranny need to be re-built or can the seals be replaced with minor(somewhat) repairs?
