Tranny Issues, Did I Over Fill It?

So checked the didstick and seemed to be a quart low on the stick. Wife says tranny acting funny lately, so dropped a quart and the very next morning she would not shift untill in warmed up a little. then on my way to the desert, the A/T Temp light came on and stayed on for an hour. then I noticed the smell of burnt oil, stopped the truck, got out to take a peak, she was dripping tranny oil and had no idea where it was comming from. was it boiling over and made its way out the didstick tube where they meet? Later that day I drained about half quart or so and seemed to act a little better. should I change the tranny fluit again? 2nd time in the last 3K milkes. I was on a 6% grade at 55mph maybe 3Krpm. loaded with maybe 300lbs more than usuall. did I overfill it originally?

Overfilling will cause excessive pressure and oil will blow out where it can. Hopefully you didn't blow out any seals. There should be a "fill bolt" on the side of the transmission about halfway up. when parked on level ground you should not fill above this hole.

If you're on level ground open this side "fill hole"
if you're overfilled oil will come out. Let it drain until it stops.

Is this true with an automatic transmission? I thought it was filled through the dipstick and checked with the dipstick. Otherwise I see no reason for the dipstick.

I know this is true of the manual transmissions. Still hunting for an R150 for my 4runner. If only other things would quit needing attention

The auto is filled through the stick. You are checking the fluid with it running, in neutral and warm correct? And what do you mean by acting "funny"? Hard shifts? Neutrals out? What's the condition of the fluid as far as color/smell?

big help on this guys. pretty sure I overfilled it. I'll go ahead and change the oil and start all over again. my oil only has 1,500 miles on the last tranny service, but it smells burned now. looks like 2.5qts, thanks for the pic toy3sgte.

If you drain the transmission and the transfer unit it will take approx 5 quarts.

For what it's worth I was told by a transmission shop to not smell it off the dipstick as it will often smell burned.
They said to wipe some on your hand and smell it.

If it smells burned on the stick, it'll smell just as burned on your hand, only you'll have hot ATF on your hand...

Apparently not according to the pro I trust.
He told me this when I told him my fluid smelled burned.
The stick gets hotter than the fluid apparently.

Have you checked your turbo encabulator? This short video will explain what the turbo encabulator does, and it has troubleshooting instructions toward the end.

If it smells burnt on the stick it will smell the same on your hand, as far as I know steel doesn't absorb odors, it's the fluid that smells not the stick, even though the Wizard said it ain't so.

Actually, steel can absorb odors. Anything porous can.

Trust who you want, but that'd be good for nothing more than a laugh at the tranny shop where I work.

That's what I thought. Not my truck having the problem but I'm going to rectify that situation with a 5 speed before that happens

The only (and most annoying) auto trans I've ever seen that didn't seem to have a dip stick was my ex girls Cavalier... Couldn't find one for the life of me.
