92 Toyota truck with 22RE engine and 165k miles. I've owned it for 6 months and it's been pretty good. No weird noises, or real problems. I did my first tune up on it yesterday. I changed the oil, and filter, did new air filter, new ngk plugs, new ngk wires, and a new cap and rotor. I tried to get the pcv valve out but it was stuck. Tried multiple times, and couldn't get it. Some of the grommet cracked off and broke. So I figured I'd try to get the pcv valve out later which I did. I have a new valve, but I'm waiting on a grommet from the parts store.

Anyway, after all the work is done except the pcv valve, my truck now ticks. You can hear it mostly from the cab. It doesn't tick at idle, only as you starting give it gas while driving. It gets louder and faster ticking as you give it more gas. Once you let go of the gas it's completely gone.

I'm wondering what is wrong? It didn't happen before this. I originally used 10w-30, and immediately changed the oil to 10w-40 thinking it would fix it but it didn't. I even swapped the old plugs back, and the old rotor and cap and it's the same thing. I'm wondering if I messed up the timing or if the noise is coming from the pcv valve where the grommet is?

its coming from the valve cover. replace grommet and pcv valve and it should go away.

A lot of times ticking noises come from overtightening the valve cover. Did you remove and replace it during your tune-up?

I put a new grommet and pcv valve in it, and it's still ticking same as before. It's definitely ticking from the valve cover. I didn't take the valve cover off when I did the tune up. I'm thinking I should try to adjust the valve lash on the truck, and go from there. Seems like a lot of people solve this problem with that. I'm just not sure how to adjust them with the engine hot as I feel it's a delicate process, and not something to rush. Maybe I'll try to do them cold with the intake 0.007 and exhaust 0.011

I put a whole new top end on my truck when i rebuilt the motor, and it still ticked in the valve cover. Ive gone over the valves a few times and adjusted and everything is set accordingly. I have just relagated it to being noisy...

My theory is it always ticked. You were just more aware of the noises after your tune up. Also there's a rubber grommet that goes around the steering shaft where it goes thru the firewall. I'll bet it's mostly gone? Replace that sucker and it will be pleasantly quiet.

I let my brother in law see the truck, and get his opinion since he's pretty good with working on cars. He drove it around, then looked at it under the hood. He's quite sure it's coming from exhaust manifold. The noise isn't so much a tick, but almost sounds like a leak coming from one of the cylinders on every stroke, sounding like a valve problem. It almost sounds like a 'swishing' I guess I was just misjudging it. It's more clear in the cab than with the hood popped. I think he may be right, as it is very loud in the cab, where the exhaust manifold is, and that would make more sense. He said to take the shield off the exhaust manifold and spray it with soapy water than start it and see where it bubbles, or if there's a gasket that doesn't look right.

I don't think I need to be too worried about it, but I do want to fix it. I
so many summer house projects going on, and this truck isn't my daily driver, just for home depot trips and for a couple runs of my qp for my paver patio.

the 22re factory manifold exhaust gasket is marginal at best, and people make the situation worse by removing the factory engine-to-exhaust brace that keeps the exhaust system locked down.

what you want is one of the aftermarket expandable exhaust gaskets, they rock... can't remember the name, search the forum.
