Cut Engine Wiring Harness...Is this Common?

Cut Engine Wiring Harness...Is this Common?
Hello all,
I just recently bought a 89 Toyota Pickup 4WD with a 22re from a friend with a bad engine (rod knock). I've drove the truck before and it ran great before the engine failure.
So I picked up a good 22re complete engine locally and I'm in the process of swapping engines.
This is what I found odd. The engine wiring harness leading to the ecu plugs have multiple cut wires although the truck still ran well before. Just wondering if the truck may have came with a different engine from the factory, 22r maybe??
Also the engine i bought has a complete uncut wiring harness although the ecu plugs are different shapes so it won't plug into the 22re ecu I have now.
Originally I wanted to use the unhacked harness but since it won't plug into the ecu that won't work unless I use the matching ecu.
I'm just looking for suggestions before I install the new engine in. I guess I could keep it simple and use the hacked harness since it worked before and transfer it to the new engine.

You have no idea of what year the used engine came out of??
I would just get the ECU for the used engine and be done
I can only guess the things that don`t work from all those cut wires.
Till you remove the good harness and install the cut one it will be real lucky if it runs or would be if it is mine.

Ok, the new engine and harness is from a 91. So I guess I need a 91 Ecu to clean this up. The Ecu I have now won't plug into the new harness
Did the 89 pickups come with 22r engine from the factory?

i'm guessing that carbed vs. efi harnesses would be radically different, so much so that no amount of hacking could really make up the difference... it's probably not an issue.
so both harnesses plug into the sensors on the new engine correctly? and the airbox as well?
