Then the 4Runner will probably have more flex. To keep a vehicle like that shiny side up even though when its already not a very good road vehicle, they had to fit a huge swaybar.

That kind of flex is a lot of show, but does it really do anything for the "go"?

I've driven through stuff like that quite a bit and have lifted wheels many times. Only once have I even thought I might have a chance of going over. (see avatar pic) Gearing and speed had a lot more to do with it than flex.

That said, one of the coolest crawlers I've ever seen in person was a full-size Chevy shortbed on 39" tires. Tons of flex, but more importantly, he had gears. 300:1 crawl ratio. He veeerrrrryyy slowly walked and flexed over the toughest line on the Z-turn on Moab Rim without a drop of sweat.

Wow. Threads take off in a hurry.

While I agree that lockers are a FAR better investement than a lift, I have a whole new respect for the whole flex thing. Sitting in Moab right now with a severe case of the jitters.

Just about dumped my truck today on a ledge thanks to no flex. I haven't been that close to a roll in a long time. The SAS guys were puckered, but I was a bumper grab from going over hard. Not cool.

It was all in the compression travel. If I had had another 3 inches of uptravel, I would have been okay.

Good luck, definetly loving this thread.

And Dave, thanks for the wheels man! They look and work awesome. I've been running around on trails and on the highway at 14 with no issues since Saturday. NICE.

mods to the truck help, but you also gotta know how to use your truck. I have taken my 84 when it was bone stock (open diffs on 31's) some places my buddy with 35's and rear locker couldnt go.

For giggles I would make part of the contest a MPG wager.....I would bet going with 31's and lockers would spank the crap out of that jeeps mpg...not to mention wheel surprisingly well....keep weight down.....IMO one of the keys to yotas secerets of success that is often overlooked is they are super light.

One vote for a locker(s) and 33x10.5 tsl's, save some cash on custom armour and find some local steeler see what he would charge, you just have to grind and paint. If you can do the t-case gears yourself, and you are not using this as your dd, another great mod, more crawling less breaking (both kinds)

So far I've done nothing except the routine stuff on a 20 year old vehicle. I have however put away some money and narrowed down what I need to do in what order.

Gears and rear locker first since I can still drive it back and forth to work until the tires get here on the 26th. (31/10.50/15 treadwrights for 75$ each).

The tires are the second step.

A Bud Built T-case plate for some more ground clearance is third.

350$ for 4.70:1 t-case gears (cost me 200$ +/- to get them installed) will be fourth.

And that should do it at a bare minimum. I'm still trying to get some bumpers built as well as some sliders and would love to put some tube doors and a full cage in there but that will have to wait.

I think the next thing I'll do is a 2" lift to get the body up away from the rocks.

Oh and I'll be sure and post up pics as I get stuff done and darn sure post up after the competition. I think I'm going to smoke that Rubicons rump.

This is insane. Who needs lift when you got a snorkel and a diesel engine.
