On mine, my thermostat housing had a spot for it on top..From what I've read on here, some don't have it though.

the probe isn't long enough... it's just barely going to reach to the t-stat housing...

for me anyway... I guess it depends on the manufacturer of the gauge...

mine's not an electronic gauge; if it were electronic, there wouldn't be an issue...

Are you trying to have two working gauges or just one? If you want to just have one gauge then replace the factoy sender(which is just aft of the thermo housing) with one for the new gauge making sure the thread types are the same.

If you have a thermo housing with the senser on it, that one goes to the ECU so I wouldn't fart with that one.

For your temp probe install in the upper rad hose what kind of sealent did you use to put the probe in it looks white in the pic. Did you have a male pipe end that you taped the metal tube and use adhesive

also what size outside diameter was the pipe and how thick was it

IIRC it was 1.5" OD pipe, don't know the thickness for sure, looks like maybe 1/8" in the pic. The sealant tube is in the pics (water pump sealant), its gray. The white you see is some teflon tape used between an adapter and probe threads.
