Hey i've got a 91 4runner with an IFS. I'm not going to be doing an SAS for a while but I do want a small lift for the mean time. I don't want to go higher than 33s but i'm stumped on what size lift. I thought I could do a 2in but the Rough Country 4in lift recommends 33s. So my question is, could I get away with a 2in suspension lift with a 1in spacer in the rear (to fix the sag) and put 33s on it? 33x12.5 would be nice but i'd be willing to stick with 10.5 if I have too. . .


Any opinions, suggestions, pictures? Thanks!

It will sag less with spacer. Band aid.
Better option new coils. Fixed.

I had good luck with my set up. It was a pickup with leafs in the rear so I cant help as far as the coils go but I used 1.5" ball joint spacers up front and cranked the torsion bars up a bit. I fit a 33x12.5" tire in it. I did have to trim the pinch weld a bit and the bottom of the fender a little. I cut out a small triangle and bent it back and re welded it so you can't even tell that the fender was trimmed.

I got 2-2.5" of lift with the ball joint spacer. I did have to put a couple washers in the shock to make it longer because it was limiting my drop/lift a little, but it worked and I did not have to get longer shocks.

I am now putting on a 4" IFS lift and 35's and will need new shocks. If you are going cheap or to get buy for a short while then go BJ spacers and coil spacers. Otherwise go all out.

1.5" bj spacers, LC springs, extended shocks, diff drop, sway bar drop and trim the pinch worlds.

Leave it alone till the SAS that's what I am doing just my opinion though.

 

i'm holding out for my SAS also on the 93 runner... maybe a 1" body lift to accomodate a new motor down the road....

 

I thought about waiting till me SAS but that may not be for a couple of years. I went on a snow camping trip my co worker and his friends and they are rubicon freaks. We went to to Ellis through Wentworth Springs (I think that's it) and I kept bottoming out. I had the tow package and that saved my ass, literally but it got annoying so I decided I want a lift.

The Bj spacers, coils and new suspension seems the inexpensive way to go, How much lift will that give me? I read somewhere that that setup gave this guy a 2-3in lift but then i've heard other people say it gave them nothing. And like I said, an SAS is far down the road so how long will the setup last and i hard can I beat on it?

I'm going to be adding the ARB bumper and a winch so the front will be very heavy, is that going to be a problem for it?

Meigsrock said to fit 12.5 in there I would need to trim a little bit, what about with 10.5?

 

I find that hard to believe, but my rig had the BJ spacers when I bought it.

When I added a tube bumper and a winch I also went with Rancho 24mm t-bars. My setup is way lighter than an ARB and I think it was needed. My thought behind it was sure I *could* crank up the stock t-bars but ride quality would be very harsh. With the heavier t-bars I'm at a 'nominal' setting and the ride was a little better than pre-bumper / winch / 24mm t-bars. When selecting t-bars, go only as big as necessary (might even want to call ARB USA to ask what they think - OME shocks ).

I have Goodyear MT-R's 275/85R17 which is about 33 x 11's. The fronts rubbed with the above setup and a 1" body lift. It took the following steps to stop the contact:
* cranked up t-bars a little more for ride height but still not enough to be harsh
* pounded back the pinch weld at the rear of the wheel well.
* 1/4" wheel spacer (this was installed because I had them laying around and it gives me a little cushion...may not be necessary)

i have the 2.5 old man emu heavy duty lift and i run 33s and its a good lift everything about this lift has been good for me. if you do a spacer in the back it will eventually sag your springs down the best thing to do its get heavy duty coils like the OME has, this is what mine looks like, it has some good flex to

 

I have the 1.5in BJ up front and new coils with extended shocks all around that I bought from ToyTec...no problems.

 

A narrower tire and / or deeper back spacing on the rim will decrease the swing arc radius of the tire and help with eliminating need for trimming fenders, although the pinch weld may still need to be trimmed or hammered down which is very common and easy to do.

I picked up my 12.5"s and rims for a bargain used so that is what I run. I don't know the backspacing on my rims but I know it is less than a stock pickup rim so it has a wider stance than a stock rim. It might be a 3.75" back space because it also fits on my FJ60. I think the pickup rims have 4" back spacing.

So keep this in mind if you shop for new rims. It would also be cheaper to use stock rims with a 10.5" tire but stock rims are usually ugly. You could also consider a 32" tire.

I would put the lift on first and then shop for rims or tires. See if you can find friends or someone that will lend you some different sets of tire and rim combos to try for a day or two and see what fits.

The ball joint spacer lift does work and get you up there but how much depends on the torsion bar setting you put it at when done. You can install them to get more travel but no lift if you lower your T-bar setting. I torqued mine up a bit and gained about 2-2.5" and the ride is not bad at all. If you don't want to trim you could always add a 1" body lift to help a little which is also fairly common, or buy high clearance fiberglass fenders.
