strong exhaust smell?

whats going on guys n gals.. here's my question,

i own a 95 Runner with a 3VE 3.slow... i've noticed very strong exhuast smell, more abnormal then before. i've noticed also while i'm in drive(ideling) on the brake i can feel the motor shaking more. now i've just done a tune up, plugs, wires, injector cleaner, oil change.
i can't figure it out?!?

has anyone have any sudgestions?

Not to sound like a dick, but have you popped the hood and done any simple checks like fluid level checks, loose plugs/wires, vaccum hose leaks, electrical connections? or even exhaust leaks?
Is the leak outside the engine bay or inside? (if so..is your fan on vent open?) Have you had any preivious damage wheeling done to the vehicle? Were the injectors sent out to be cleaned or just the fuel additive? If all seems reasonably ok, try jumping you diagnostic terminals and see if any codes come up.

i've checked all vacume lines(all seems to be ok) plugs are oem, nice and tight.
haven't done any crazy off-roading. the muffler and piping is only half a year old.

oh i should of added... the smell not getting into the truck. my buddy has the same motor about the same km, and his exhaust fumes are not bad like mine is. i just might change all the vacume line and see what happens. sometimes you can't detect the smallest crack in those black hoses.

i'm going pull the injectors this weekend and see if there gummed up.
thanks for the tips 22RE yota.

step by step i guess..

hmm.. check your battery terminals. make sure they are not corroded and make sure the wires are in good condition. my 4runner shook and hesitated in the rain when my main ground/negative cable started to corrode.

It could be your o2 sensor, because before i replaced mine it smelt like fuel pretty bad, after i replaced it went away.
just a thought.

Could be as simple as a small exaust leak at the manifolds or the manifolds them selves.

I have the same problem, same year, STRONG exhaust smell, new plugs, wires, o2, cap, no vacuum leaks (that I know of), has check engine light on but don't know what the codes are. I can reset the ECU and it goes away (check engine light) for about 50 miles or so but still acts the same? Also, I have all new exhaust on it as I thought the cat was clogged, no cat now which helped SOME lost power but by no means solved the rough running and exhaust smell. I'm ready to yank it all out and small block it I'm so frustrated!

Thanks.

No car "requires" a cat to operate as long as the O2 sensors remain in place. Older style cats provide more harm then good for emmisions in the long run. California vehicles usually have one or two extra "pre-cats" to pass start up emission tests as well as testing under normal operation (full cats) which is also why California cars put less power to the wheels and get worse fuel economy then similer models in other states.
