Looking to get some insight on how to correctly wire the tach. Bought a cluster from what I believe to be an 86 with a 22RE going in to my 88 4Runner 22RE. I have all my gauges working correctly except my tach and coolant temp gauge. Tach is unresponsive no matter how I wire it and I am at a loss... The temp gauge is immediately under the red line when I start the vehicle. I think I'll just end up swapping my temp gauges with my old one. My tach on the other hand (which is the whole reason I bought this cluster) I can't figure out for the life of me. Looking for someone smarter than me to help out! Thanks in advance!
Good morning So I have a 91 and it was plug and play besides the oil temp gauge, its been a while since I went through that thread I linked but it may have some info for you? If not someone should chime in
Also was the tach on the SR5 gauge functional or?

It was purchased online, I can't confirm myself if it was ever working but I was told it was! And thanks Disco! I appreciate any and all help very much!
My tach doesn't work even wired this way. Think I may have just gotten a lemon cluster... Which brings me to my next question. Fixing/Rebuilding a tach if anyone has any knowledge on it that would be awesome.
Well I was gonna say it may be cheaper to go to Yodajims and grab another cluster, if it doesn’t work they usually are good with swapping it out. Finding a repair shop for the tach may be a task in the disposable world we live in, there may be a shop but I’m not aware of one or the cost??
I've done a few of these cluster swaps from 1985 and 1986 SR5 clusters into my 88 and a couple 87's and they were plug and play except for the oil pressure sender. I always made sure to get the gauge sender to replace my idiot light pressure switch.
I did have a working tach that I never got to work with my 3.4 swap. Actually two good working tach's. It seems there is a difference between the 22RE tach and the 3.0 tach. All the 3.4 swap tach mods seemed to work for people with a 3.0 tach. I had a couple electronic experts PM me to walk me through mods to get it working and nope. Plug it back into a 22RE and they work. I sold one to a buddy and I still have the other.
I contacted Dakota Digital years ago to see if their tach adapter would work for me and they never got back to me after several tries.
Yeah I'm willing to try repair it myself but the guy I bought it from is willing to work with me, he has another if this one isn't working for me, so it's back to the garage tonight to double check a few things and go from there! Haven't been to YodaJims since I was a kid, haha. Honestly though they shut down!

Yeah oil pressure sender is swapped that's all good. Seemed like plug and play was the most likely scenario for most people. Never that easy for me it seems hahaha

As mine is a 91 and different I can’t be too much help but do you know how to tell between the 3.0 and the RE cluster? When I went to yodajims a majority of them were off of 3.0’s but mine had a switch to toggle between 4 and 6 cylinder if I remember correctly but again it’s a different gen cluster.

The YotaYard may have shut down but Jim and his wife ran the YotaYard and they split and he opened up YodaJims, that’s my understanding but as far as I know Jim’s is still around.
@Discombobulated All the SR5 clusters with a tach I had my hands on were from 2nd gen trucks with 22RE's. I "think" I need a cluster from an 88 pickup (or 88-89 4Runner) with the 3.0 to do the tach mods and make it work with my 3.4. I just gave up trying to find one and pay the money people want for them, Especially with no guarantee to work.
I'm building a cage on my current truck and it's really interfering with my dash. I'm seriously considering just fabricating a dash and using universal gauges like Autometer and a GPS speedometer.
