Question speedometer stopped

well, 350,027 miles after the truck was bought, the speedometer stopped.

i looked. pulled out the cable at the tranny, slid it back in.
next, i will remove the dash/ display to check that part.

is there something i should be looking for (or more importantly finding) :?:

how tough is this to repair ?...seems im doing everything 1 at a time..as soon as i fix something, another thing breaks.

If you have a cable driven speedometer and not the electronic one, I can almost guarantee that the cable has snapped in the housing. If that's the case, you'll need a new one. Some guys have had luck with NAPA cables, but I spent the extra cash on a Toyota OEM cable.

Dan-

Easiest way to check the cable is remove the speedo from the truck, and drive the truck around. If the cable has snapped, it won't spin.

I have seen it both ways, where the cable snaps and where the speedo itself goes out.

If you need a cable, let me know and I will get you one from Toyota.

There's one more possibility: The 'driven gear', which sits on the end of the speedo cable inside the transfer case, can wear its teeth down to where it no longer goes. Nylon gear being driven by steel gear. Fortunately, it's easy to replace .

I would pull VSS out of transfer and cable out of the speedo and spin manually and to see if broken.

thanks everyone\

so, hopefully its the cable.

Deathcouger, are you saying, to remove the guage, and watch the cable, (while driving) to ensure the cable is still intact...leading to the guage itself.

or if it doesn't spin, it can be ;
- cable
- gears inside tranny area ...??

but either way, its an easy fix ?? ( my biggest question, is it is stupid/ easy), b/c i can drive w/out it, and while in gear, can determine how fast i go by the rpm's

Yea, just remove the speedo and drive a few feet is all you need to do. You should immediately see the cable moving. If not, you know its the cable, or drive gear.

Easiest way to check that is pull the cable at the case, and spin it by hand while having someone watch the other end in the cab.
