Cable to electric speedo swap

I am wondering if this is possible....
I have a 94 automatic 2wd 4runner (donor) and a 95 4wd automatic and I'm wondering if I can swap the speedos...the 94 has an all electronic speedo and the 95 has a cable driven speedo, can I swap all the parts over from the 94 to get rid of the cable driven speedo? Has this been do e before?!

Any help is greatly appreciated....

I'm pretty sure the speedometer assembly(in the instrument cluster) can be swapped(can't see why you couldn't). And I do know for sure that you can swap the parts on the transmission/transfer case end...sometimes. Other times you can't, because some of the speedometer driven gears for the VSS type are different in size from the cable drive type.

Yes.

No.

Sweet, I'll try to change it over this weekend....are there any benefits to a cable speedo? Mine was squeeling real bad, changed cabled and it never went away, I took the cluster out and sprayed some degreaser on the gears to clean the old grease off, and put some oil on it, it doesn't make noise anymore, but now when I'm going 55, it says I'm going 90....should I try to fix this problem or just go to an electric speedo since I have all the parts for it?

I haven't had any problems with the cable driven speedo on my 88. So it's hard for me to say they are any benefits to a VSS driven speedo. But if one works, and the other doesn't, then of course the one that works is the one with the most benefits.

And, I don't know what you mean by "try to fix this problem". What other way besides replacing the speedometer assembly is there? IOW, I have no clue how to fix whatever you did to the damn thing. I do know one thing for sure though, I won't be cleaning/degreasing and oiling mine...EVER! Just to be on the safe side.

There is wiring involved, but I have no idea if it is difficult or not. The ECM gets the VSS1 (speed) signal from either a reed switch in the combo meter itself (cable-driven), or from the electronic VSS1 in the back of the transfer case. I would hope that Toyota would run all the wires to the same place, so that it is just a matter of switching connectors. But I don't know.

Since you don't have a transfer case on the 2wd, I assume that the electronic VSS1 plugs into the transmission somewhere. I hope the wires are long enough to move it to the back of the transfer case on the 4wd.

Do tell us how it turns out.

I might try and take a look at the current speedo, and see if i can find out why all of a sudden its running too fast...maybe some oil got one one of the gears and making it spin faster than it should? i think replacing the speedo would be a pain, but I might do it if I can't fix the other....one thing i did notice though after driving around, the difference between actual driving speed and what the speedo says, seeems to get closer to accurate the longer I drive...maybe it will correct itself after a few weeks of driving...i will keep you in the know...especially cause there have been lots of people having problems witha noisy speedo, and most think its the cable...I do not believe it is always the cable...i think the speedo needs to be lubed somehow...just not sure what parts need oil and what parts don't....could be I lubed something up that should have been lubed, hence the fast speedo.
