electrical to mechanical speedometer conversion

Hey guys, I was hoping someone on here could help me out. I have a 1990 toyota 4runner and I am in the middle of putting a 5 speed in it. The only problem that I am having so far is this. The speedometer cable was mecanical on the automatic tranny that was in the truck. The tranny I got was from a 1992 4runner and it was electrical but mechanical on the inside. Is there some adapter that I can buy to make the mechanical cable work? Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by the tranny from the 92 was electrical but mechanical on the inside? Do you mean that its an electrical speed sensor on the t-case?

You might have to swap in a speedometer from a cluster that is an electronically controlled speedometer. I haven't seen an adapter for it, but then again I haven't seen a lot of things

Dude! i have a mechanical sensor in my garage... pretty sure you can jsut swap them out.

its from a manual 5spd that i was going to swap into my runner, i had the exact opposite problem as you are having, but i eventually found a tranny with an electric sensor... we should have gotten together earlier about this LOL

That sounds awesome, does anyone know for sure if they do swap out? The automatic one was too small for the hole and the gear on the end was to small also.

Can speak a little on the later MR2s. When the factory went from a mechanical to electric speedo output (believe '93), you could swap the years by replacing the entire external sending unit. This was a preferable thing, in that the '93 had LSD, and the '91-'92 didn't, so you could put an LSD trans in a '91-'92 by just swapping the sending unit.

Believe this also came up with the 6-speed C-series trans, for swapping in to the '85-'89. Just replace the sending unit. There are (or were) some 20v 6speeds floating around, out there.

here is my issue the hole is too big for the mechanical sensor what to do?..
If i get a electrical speedometer do i need the whole main hardness from the donor i can just wire it separate?.. thanks

Electrical speedo swapped into a mechanical truck !

Ok, found some threads on here regarding this issue but no definitive answers. What I have is a 1992 R150 manual/transfer case with electronic speedo unit and am putting it into a 1995 that came with the A340 auto and a mechanical speedo. I tried just swapping sending units but the holes are completely different. The electrical one being a much larger diameter. What have people done to fix this ? I have the entire 92 donor and was going to use the manual tranny/engine harness so all the wires will be correct up to the ECU. After that Im unsure as to whats going on and the FSM wiring diagrams are really vague when it comes to the VSS. Any help is appreciated.

I'm failing reading comp' Don't know which one you're putting in but your answer is in post #9. You need the bigger sensor right..

IIRC the VSS signal is output by the cluster-gauge in a mechanical speedo. Should be PnP with the right computer.

well if you reference post #10, you will see the larger diameter electrical sending unit. Thats the one I want to use but the truck Im putting it in has the smaller diameter mechanical sending unit. Ill try to take some pics tomorrow but its exactly the problem the fella in post #10 is having. Was hoping he would give me a hint or two !! haha

Ok so, you have a large bore hole and need a large bore mechanical sender. Probably still got that wrong but aslong as YOU know what you need s'all good.

Judging by the plastic gear on Irab88's photo those are both the smaller bore.

I'm assuming you have both on hand, measurements would be a helpful addition to the thread. Slide/dial caliper or even just eye balled against a ruler.

One is a 22x1.50mm(Thanks marlin crawler)

MC has a mechanical to electric sensor that goes onto the 22x1.5 mechanical speedo.

Junk yard or parts store, basicly anyone with a good parts interchange database, should be able to tell you/us what years are which bore and type.

Sorry not alot of help I'll keep pokeing around and see if I can find anything.

Didn't have to poke to much

SC149, is the smaller electric type
SC180, is the larger electric type

Ebay links, for SC149, for SC180

And I'm thinking the electrical ones might convert to mechanical, note the white stuff "oozing" at the case juncture.

Don't have any spares on hand to experiment with, sorry.

the tacomas and 96 + 4runners have the larger VSS your looking for + the 92 - 95 v6 trucks and 4Runners
I just swapped one in "brads build" .. it is a direct replacement

Sorry to revive such an old thread.......

Need a little guidance please.....Bought a 96 4-Runner 4X4 Tranni for my 96 4x4 Tacoma. The speedometer pick up's are slightly different. The 4 Runner was electronic and my Taco, Cable.

If I put the Taco one in the 4 Runner and spin the output shaft it does not turn the cable as it does in the original Taco tranni.

On closer inspection the plastic gears are slightly different diameters and the worm gear that drives them inside the casing too is slightly different size.........The smaller gear is not touching the worm gear of course....

What is the best/easiest way to make my Taco cable drive work in the Runner Tranni. Thanks in advance.....
