Soft Tops on 1st Gen 4runner

So I Recently took the top off my 88 4runner--and I gotta say, It's AWESOME! Nothin cooler than Packin ten people into a 5-seater without opening a single door. But... It's Kind of a Hassle having to put a tarp over it every night to keep wild cats from sleeping in it and to keep the Bird crap out, not to mention having to worry about the Rain, So I'm lookin to buy a Soft Topper. I've read up on it, and from what I've found [Mostly on this Forum] there's only three Companies out there that Sell[Sold] them...
-Kayline/Specialty top Co.
-Downey
-Can-Back

Apparently Kayline went out of business, sold out to STC, and now STC has gone out of business... So, that rules them out, and the Can-Back isn't a Convertible-Style top, which is really what I'm looking for. The Downey convertible top is just what I'm lookin for, but the Price isn't listed on the Site. Sooo.... Does anybody here know how much the Downys go for, or maybe know of anywhere else I could Acquire a Convertible-style top for an 88 4runner? Damn, it'd be soooo cool having one of those..

Yes, it would be. I'm still in the salivating stage of having one of my own, myself.

Surely in your search you've run across those who have made their own. I recall there are also some who've suggested some sort of private production of them. At any rate, you might try contacting some of them personally. Did you see the options on 4crawler's site?

Oh yeah....welcome to the board! lol!

I have the Downey bikini top on my 89 4Runner and I LOVE it!! I haven't had the top on for close to 3 years. since I live in Arizona its easy to do that.

I paid something around $180 for it including shipping:

And it came with everything you need for it. I can send you more pics if you want/need.

Thanks for the Suggestions, but I'm really looking for more of a Full-cover top than a Bikini Top. I'm thinking abiut getting the one that Downey Sells[Part # 63010], but It doesn't give the cost on the site, so... Might anybody here know what the cost is? [the Full Convertible-style top, not the bikini top] also, has anyone here ever boughten one from downey? If so, hows the quality/ease of installation/all of that?

You know what, I'll bet you a Can-back could be modified to be convertable. I've got pictures of one up close that I'll study....as I already have been.

I want a full-blown convertible, also. No bikini for this guy! You see, being monetarily challenged I've decided to make one of my own. But, alas I've not yet the materials or the tools to do it up proper like.

Wish I could help you more with what you're looking into. Have you tried calling Downey? Do they not have a phone or other means of contact?

That top is $517.85 in the 2006 catalog! damn, Downey is freaking expensive but the quality is top notch.

517, huh? Well, that's still cheaper than the Can-Back. I might do a little more Searching, but I think I'm gonna go with The downey. It's suprising how hard it is to find any info about toppers like this--I mean, they made the 1st gens for almost a Decade. I can't hardly wait till I get one, though... No more Leaky-Tarps-and-Duct-Tape-Rainy-wet-homework-Days for me! Thanks For the Help!

I liked the Downey top, but when I called they said it was the STC top which is now gone. That was as of about a month ago and that is why there is no price listed. As noted many of us have taken matters into our own hands. There are a few DIY's out there that are true tops and then mine is more of a tonneau cover. I figured that my time with passengers would only be on nice days and I can remove the front section of the cover.
