I recently aquired n 86 4wd pickup in pretty good shape. Only major issue was that the front right wheel's camber looked horrible and bearings felt beyond shot. Lots of play in the wheel when jacked off the ground. When I opened things up this is what I found. If I buy a new CV half shaft, will it provide me with everything I need to replace this? What about that little mangled brass looking thing? Any seals I need? I'm also doing both wheel bearings and bought the marling crawler kit.
Otherwise known as the Outer steering knuckle bushing.
Excellent thanks for the info. I've been doing a bunch of research and am finding conflicting info. Are there two brass bushings per side on the IFS trucks? An inner bushing and outer bushing? Do the brass bushings from 1985 and prior solid axle trucks fit the IFS trucks? What product should I use to lubricate them before installing the new CV halfshaft? If anyone has any answers it would be of tremendous help to me! Thanks!
And also this, but which only pictures one bushing. From the picture it looks like it's the inner bushing and seal. If I could just find the outer bushing then this would be the best bet on price.
Would be nice to know what actually caused that carnage since it seems very unusual.
I think it was caused by driving on completely shot wheel bearings. The wheel bearings were literally disintegrated. Nearly nothing left of them. There was so much play in the tire/wheel it felt like it was about to fall off. I think the total lack of support put too much strain on the end of the shaft and it snapped.
So I've bought all new wheel bearings, brass bushings, cv shafts and seals. The smallest rubber seal, orange colored seal and the seal directly above the orange colored seal all came in the Marlin Crawler wheel bearing kit. But I don't see a spot on my truck for either the small rubber seal or orange seal. They don't seem to exist on my truck unless I'm somehow overlooking them. The large seal in the picture directly above the smallest rubber seal came with the brass bushings and I clearly see a home for it on the truck. But as far as the other two, I can't figure out why I have them. I'm only seeing installation spots for two of these four seals on my truck. 4x4 1986. What gives?
Also, does anyone have a part number or name for this large seal? It is from behind the rotor, attached to the steering knuckle.
