Just want to give the quick THANKS to all @ yotatech

I lifted my truck with the following
FRONT:
HOME BREW 1/5" BJ spacers
4 crawler DIFF Drop
4 crawler sway bar drop
+ a bit of torsion turn
REAR:
Downey 3" rear lift springs
Downey U-BOLT FLIP KIT

STORY:
Had to weld a bolt to the downey flip kit plate for the shock mount
there were NO provisions for the shock mount, and the OE was removed

HERES THE QUESTION
WHERE can I source SHOCKS that are 15" FROM BOLT TO BOLT???

would that be 15" Bolt 2 Bolt, compressed or extended? If compressed, what's the extended length? If extended, what's the compressed length?
getting shocks isn't always just as easy as saying "THIS LONG"

 

as follows
15" ride height
10"compressed
18" extended

Found some ranchos that fit the bill
RS-5000 series

 

how can you find how long they are compressed and extended?

I did find rancho RS5119 seams to work in my application (installing today)
If I would have found your chart it would have saved me a few hours



heres how I did it. dont know if its yotatech approved or not...
measure with NO load and vehical on flat level ground
ADD weight in rear, till axle is on bump stops + measure.
remove weight, jack FRAME till rear tire has just begun to unload + measure

I found rancho's from summit racing in stock
I hate that place but in a pinch and a 10 minuet drive...

Ill see if they fit + Function today
with a follow up this evening.

 

Ranchos seam to work well for cheep-O parts
over all I am pleased with the results for the $ in it
Well see how well it works out in two weeks when we go camping/weeling/atv outing


I have been through over 20 VW's
and I can honestly say I LOVE this truck
to bad someone doesnt make replacement metal body panels
as I live in the salt capital of the snow belt AKA ohio

 

who needs metal replacements? fiberglass works perfectly well and there are several sources for 'glass panels.

I ahve a feeling that you might have problems with that bolt. This is a better design.

I have read that metal replacments are superior to glass
as the glass to metal bond is week VS metal to metal....
ANY thruth to that??


So far So Good on the shock mounting botls.
about 220 miles

Anthony1--->Why should I be expecting issues with these?

 

was on a 160 mile round trip with the rig
towing my 4wheeler and camping gear,
all seams well so far with the mounts

did a bit of trail riding with the runner also
this was really the first time I was using LOW range
for extended periods of time

I will say I did see a guy with an 88 truck there
he had lockers and seamed to be well footed vs my open diffs
went for a quick ride with him
all I could say was WOW what a DIFFerence.

NEXT UP GEARS + LOCKERS
I have about 1K in upgrades to this point in a rig I bought for 1K
I consider that cheep 2K and its well sorted for a smaller platform
now it looks like its going to get expensive. lol

 

hes saying u may have problems with that bolt cuz its pretty skinny considering the weight it will have on it.

I did think the same till reading further + thinking it out

Follow my thoughts here
#1 its NOT a leaf spring mount (leafs carry the weight)
#2 It uses a bushing (NOT ridged mount)
#3 Shocks can be Compressed + Extended by hand (doesnt carry the load)
#4 grade 8 hardware


I guess time will tell
Also going to the national forest for a WEEK of fire road camping/exploring
100's of miles of dirt roads + loaded with gear

 

You're right that it's not carrying the weight.
It is an anchor point. The shock will do the damping of the movement of the leaf spring. The force of the pulling and pushing on the bolt will cause that bolt to break. Shocks probably came with poly bushing which doesn't give as much as rubber bushing.

I was using the shock adaptor below to convert from bolt type to eye type shock mount. It didnt' last as you can see...




This is my new design which is much better and still holding up.

 

Just wanted to follow with an update

been nearly 4500 miles as installed
NO noises doesnt bottom out or limit extension
still tight in the bushings
worked great!

almost 1000 miles was done on dirt fire roads within the national forest in PA+NY. was there 3 weeks!!! best camping trip yet


Found a free day before I left and welded up a nice roof rack
had my canoe up there

didnt get to wire up the bosch 100K's before I left
they would have been nice.

So did those rs5119s work for the rear? I just got a pair of them for my 87 and i wasn't sure if they'd work out or not.
