shift rpm point

Just wondering if anyone can clear up a debate I'm having with a friend about rpm range for shifting.Seems my friend thinks that I am luging my motor by shifting at 3000 rpm range in all gears up to 5th and I dont think I am but any imput is very important for me.
1990 4 runner
3.0 203300 miles 5 speed
Any imput will help change , correct or keep my driveing habits a lot
thank you and go SEAHAWKS

Powerband doesnt start till 3.2
If I was worried about gasmilage I wouldnt be driving a 3.0 4Runner.

I don't know about the 3.0 but in my 22RE 3000 is where it likes to be when keeping a steady speed. So to do that I have to shift well after 3000.

it depends not so much on when you shift, but where your rpms will be when you get into the next gear

when i shift at 3k with my 22re, the next gear usually will put me at about 2250 rpm (except from 4th to 5th - then it will only go down about 500 rpm, which makes sense)
i dont know how differently the v6 trans is geared...but i think if when you shift, you're at or below 2000 rpms, yeah you might be lugging it a little, but to really 'lug' the engine, you'll be getting the wierd vibrations and loss of power and everything...really lugging it, would be, say, staying in 3rd all the way down to idle when you're pulling up at a green light behind cars who are just about to start moving, and then trying to get it all the way back up to 45 from 15 mph in 3rd...that is lugging. just downshift for christs sake

I agree, below 2000 feels like lugging to me. It has no power cruising at those speeds.

Dude it's a Toy man. I run my 3.0 to 5grand all day long and my buddies run their 22RE's to god knows what because most of them dont' have tachometers. No reason to do this all this all the time obviously... for the book answer to this question goto your manual. It'll tell you exactly what speed to shift at for each gear.
