That's partly what I was saying, SV, regarding Duration, etc. If something is open longer than/or when it's not/supposed to be,... how can it develop compression/Hold Air? (TED, btw, #1 is holding ZERO Air on leak down.. just making sure you saw that)...>???
Ted, I was also curious as to whether it's possible being at least 2 teeth off if he could have bent a valve or two? NOTHING DRAMATIC, ..just enough to not hold air on leak down? (Looks to me that the bright link is 2 TEETH off the dimple.... And that's assuming the bright link for 6'o'clock stayed in place as well, right?)......
Far as the Deck,.... ask around, SV.. I have a guy near me that if I tow it to him.... He'd find a way to level that situation without me having to bring him the motor... But it would NOT be '5 minutes and I'll be done' kinda thing. He'd wanna keep it and get back to me.
TED? Sure, I'd let HIM take a file to it! ME? I've built these a few times now... and I just wouldn't feel comfy... I would want to pull it and at LEAST take it in to my machinist(just the timing cover) and have him shave a couple times until I was 'plum'! Might take a couple trips... But that would be a fine 20Min Sacrifice for ME, anyway, in comparison to pulling the motor! ya know?
Also,.... TED? I wanted to ask what you thought of his idea of "just resetting the CAM sprocket to 11:55 on the dimple/12 Cog"...??? I just can't see how, were it me, that I FOR SURE would have the lower bright link at 6'o'clock without puling the cover or at least the oil pump(even then, can't see the dimple in the crank timing chain gear)... Was just asking,... "Would you FOR SURE pull the cover, even if you decked it for someone in your shop, in order to 'reset the chain' "????

Ted, Thanks for the input!
I'll adjust the upper cam sprocket when I get the head back on. Tod also suggested that I use a straight edge and file the timing chain cover myself as opposed to taking it to a machinist. If I file it a little low I can use some RTV to re-seal it since it's not a pressurized area.
Chef: Thanks for the input as well. I can see the compression being a little low if the piston doesn't have as much sealed cylinder to compress air due to a valve closing late. As far as a bent valve, I doubt that's my issue. I don't see any tick marks on the piston due to valves hitting the top of the piston.
I'm going to clean up the engine deck, head and file the top of the timing chain cover. During reassembly I'll also adjust the upper cam sprocket and hopefully she'll put out more

>>>*Yes, I saw the sero on the leakdown test, which tells me either a valve is very bent, a piston ring is broken, the pistons is badly scored, or there is one heck of a hole somewhere.
Like, "Donde esta el pistone?"....*LOL**
Since she builds cylinder pressure, probably just a chunk of carbon holding a valve open, I have had that stuff fool me before.
My son would very likely grab a big sharp flat file and fit the thing, and think nothing of it. But he has been doing things like that for decades even though I yell at him for it. Like I said, I am lazy, I would drop the block and cover on our mill and then sit and watch it run.....*EB

A part of me wonders if the leak down tester is working right. The pistons, head and head gasket all look pretty good. I don't see any junk in the valves but I pull pull them apart this week and clean them up. I doubt that the valve stems are bent, the valves seem to be seating very flush with the seats on the head and from a visual inspection, they don't appear to be bent.
After I get everything put back together I'm going to do another leak down test, maybe I'll even do one on my tundra this week to test my leak down tester.
The mechanical timing being off a tooth or so would explain the lack of compression if the valves aren't closing soon enough in the stroke for the piston to build up as much pressure.
I don't know exactly what is going on. I'm not an expert on engines so everything I do is by the FSM. At this point I think I'm beyond what the FSM will tell me other than the associated inspections within the FSM.
Like I posted earlier, I wonder if I have two different problems that I was thinking was all one big problem. Lack of power and compression because of the timing being off and the loss of oil coming from behind the valve cover. If the oil leak is only while the oil pressure is up from the higher RPM of the engine, then that would explain why I'm not leaking any oil in my drive way...???
At this point I'm going to clean everything up, file the timing chain cover as necessary and put everything back together. I haven't cleaned or measured the top of the engine block yet so I am not even 100% sure that the timing chain cover is sticking up. I'mm find out more tomorrow evening if not this weekend.

I VOTE, BIG TIME, ..... for retesting your Leak Down! Seriously... that is A HUGE variable that you have to KNOW is right on the money
I hope it's nothing more than that and maybe the t-cover being risen
KILL IT, MAN!

Decked the block .010 >_<
Wowz... would assume whom ever did the machine work would have thought about the timing cover...
With that much shaving... theres going to be lag in the time as well... and the timing will have no choice but to be advanced... quite a bit... or it won't run very well....
Loss of material.... lowing the head... slacking the timing chain...
Interesting thread... ^_^

Holy cow!! She is putting out now!!!! The ass end is squatting down when I stomp on the gas, I have a smooth power band all the way up to 5k rpm and you can definitely feel the power when using the good ol' butt dyno.
I don't know exactly what the problem was but I adjusted the mechanical timing and replaced all the top end gaskets and put her back together. I love this motor!!
No motor swap for me... EVER!

Great news, man!
Saw all you did..........Knew what you were planning to do...... BUT, is there a "shaved the timing cover down" in this 'things I did' post up here? ^^^ heheh.
VERY HAPPY FOR YOU, MAN! WOOT, ....almost funny how us Yota guys wanna have a "BBQ at the park, guys... MY 22REEEEEEEK IS BACK IN BIZ!" , right? hahaha.

I think it was just the mechanical timing was off a tooth.
Thanks!! I am not driving a race car by any means but I feel like I just gained 100hp. It's amazing how this 4runner feels now... just wait till I put 5.29's in it
