I need to paint my truck this summer at some point.
What are you all using for compressors? How big and how much CFM? Just wondering what the minimum I would need is.
Also what kind of gun is better, the pot gun or gravity feed and why?

I thought I had posted my rig in here (and I know the OP has already painted his rig), but better late than never. This seems to be a good thread for people to check out home painted DIY rigs.
Here's how "Bane" came home...

Then, installed a fender, lifted, locked it.

Prepped for painting. I spent too much on paint but that's what I get for getting off the shelf Dupont at $70 a gallon. Used a gun I bought for $25, don't even know if it was HLV or LV, whatever that means.

Just out of the garage, I had the paint "flattened", I didn't want a shine.

Finally, bedliner on the bottom and a few other touch ups.

Here's how it looks today, 4.5 years of wheelin' later...The paint is really holding up well, very tough. Same paint on beadlocks but the primer was a diff color, bah!!! So beadlocks are a diff shade.

You can get away with a small compressor if you have a big tank. I use one of those 5 hp compressors with the tank mounted on it with wheels. Not sure of the CFM, maybe 8 or 9 at 100psi but I feed it into a really big upright tank. When the compressor switches on I stop for a min to let it catch up. You really don't need much of a compressor if you take your time. You will get more water in the air with a smaller compressor but hell, its a truck....
I used the HVLP gravity feed style gun when I used Base/clear type paint. When I used lacquer type paint I used the syphon style. Not sure if they sell lacquer paint anymore. I also use the syphon gun for tremclad type cheap paints that I am thinning with varsol or mineral spirits.

One of my paint projects
Here is one of the paint projects I tackled several years ago. As you can see from the before and after shots, it was a pretty involved project. I used Martin Senour Auto Paint http://www.martinsenour-autopaint.com/ which is cheap, easy to spray, and you can get it in many Napa Autoparts Stores. They will give you the tech sheet with everything you need to spray it. They will even give you the stir sticks and the strainers. Find a Napa Auto that carries and mixes Martin Senour paint, ask to look through their color books, Pick a color and they will mix it for you on the spot. They even have a "Budget" line called "Crossfire", and its even less expensive and does a great job.

hey quick question for anyone who knows...when wet sanding does it matter if you sand two colors side by side for example a stripe or a two tone? I know to put a coat on and let it dry and then sand, but will it make the colors run together?

Here in canada "Paint thinner" is stuff called Varsol (company name property thing probably) but "mineral spirits" is not the same stuff.
