Second gear doesn't work...

Ok i bought this truck not too long ago and don't know the first thing about manual transmissions... I basically learned on this one. All of a sudden my second gear wont work. It goes into gear but the truck only revs, it wont move. I can skip from 1st to 3rd gear ok.
Do I need my tranny rebuilt?

Really sounds like it, usually when a gear is blown it doesnt work at all-like in your case.

Well its entierly possible that you did it, but the truck is older so it could also be due to age or the previous owner.

I'd concur on both of CJM's comment. 2nd gear is stripped - hard to lay fault without actually witnessing just how crappy/not crappy you drive!

synchros could be gone.....see if you can double clutch it. OR see if you can rev match shift....i.e. accelerate to 4krpm in 1st then try to slide into 2nd gear without using the clutch as the car decelerates and drops in RPM. it's not the best thing to do, but if it slides into gear, could be a shift fork or synchro possibly.

ok here's the weird thing, i got my mechanic ex bf to look at it and it works every time for him, yet when the car is cold and i try to shift it wont let me!
it only has 51,000k on it so the tranny should be good for awhile yet
